AmigaOS 4 @ ars technica
Source: ars technica
__________ The Amiga computer has long been the subject of intense nostalgia in the hearts of anyone who owned one. Released in 1985, only a year after the original Macintosh, the Amiga featured vivid color graphics, 4-channel stereo sampled sound, and a graphical, preemptive multitasking operating system that seemed to come from years in the future. Yet the Amiga languished in obscurity, meriting barely a footnote in most books on the history of the personal computer. In the story that arose of the battle between Bill Gates and Steve Jobs for domination of the computing universe, there was seemingly no room for a third protagonist.

The Amiga is dead, bury it!
From the mishandled remains of the Motorola 68k based Amiga, to a PowerPC "AmigaOne" board and an unready beta of Am-OS 4 (or PowerPC Linux), to a final OS4 but no current boards (and it won't run on anything else). Nice to know the same incompetence that killed the original Amiga also seems to be accurately emulated!

It is ironic, or just plain funny that they are selling an OS that will only work on a specific hardware, but wait, none is making the hardware anymore! It's a dead end.
Release the OS for other hardware and perhaps there is some life left in it. Else, it is just a matter of time till the hardware stops working. The sales for it can only go down. Who thought of this scheme, ATARI's ex CEOs?

amiga workbench was always an ugly operating system, i hated it. I much prefered the Atari ST's "gem" os, even if it was a poor blatant ripoff of MacOS. The amiga hardware was always better though with the paula sound chip and the blitter graphics.
Long gone are the days, thank god. |

I don't know, I loved TOS's simplicity (owned various atari systems from 86-93) and I wouldn't mind seeing something like that today.
