NVIDIA "G80" GeForce 8800GTX Performance Explored @ DailyTech

Source: DailyTech
_________
NVIDIA is set to launch its upcoming G80 GeForce 8800GTX and 8800GTS graphics cards next week, however, DailyTech has managed to obtain a GeForce 8800GTX board to run a couple quick benchmarks on. The GeForce 8800GTX used for testing is equipped with 768MB of GDDR3 video memory on a 384-bit memory bus as previously reported. Core and memory clocks are set at 575 MHz and 900 MHz respectively. Other GeForce 8800 series features include 128-bit HDR with 16x anti-aliasing and NVIDIA’s Quantum Physics Engine.

Previous NVIDIA graphics cards in single card configurations were limited to lower levels of anti-aliasing. With the GeForce 8800 series, users can experience 16x anti-aliasing with only a single card. DailyTech has verified the option is available in the NVIDIA control panel.

Wow, pretty impressive stuff, wonder how the r600 will compare.

X1950 XTX : Idle 184 -> load 308
8800GTX : Idle 229 -> Load 321

With near twice more transistors the power consumption looks pretty good imo, not that i like any of them anyway.

Thats some impressive numbers, reminds me of the leapfrog when Radeon 9700 was introduced.

To bad prices are going to be mad and it's a semi hard launch here in EU (not sure about US).

Anyway, waiting for r600, although i would be surprised if it's faster, but maybe it will be cheaper

It better be faster since it comes later. I'm more interested to what ATI is bringing to the table to hold their IQ edge.

what i've heard, as everybody else probably already has, about the r600 is that it will be using GDDR4, and 512bit memory bandwith. now in order to utilize those specs, it will need to be on a 20 layer PCB board. 20 layers....that's mighty thick PCB there. also, because it will be using GDDR 4, what do you guys think will be the actual supply of the boards seeing that GDDR 4 is in limited suply?

Not too sure on the ATI R600, but if memory serves it's "supposed" to be a full DX10 card. As for the Nvidia card it is basically a G70 (7000 series) with DirectX 10 stapled on. That means it's "technically" DX10 compatible.

From what I've heard so far the shader on the G80 is kinda.. wierd. It's not a unified shader like ATIs, but rather a split shader (pixel/vertex). Makes sense if the board is essentially a G70 with DX10 added on. How this effects performance will be the real question.

And you know this because you've actually handled the card and seen it in person along with being part of the design team that created it or have any information on how it was created?

didn't think so.

Edit: I wonder when ATI will be launching theirs

exclamation

I guess we will finally get benchmarks and image quality reviews now that nVidia has a card that can do HDR with FSAA. Of course, there was little to no mention of this when ATI was the only card to do this, just to help nVidia sell more cards. Any reviewer that does HDR+FSAA benchmarks should really question their own personal ethics as a reviewer.

Humph.. give me some credit here, SFO. I did say "from what I've heard" when I posted that, now didn't I?. I may not have the same close ties to these companies that some of the DH mods have, but all the info is out there for anyone to find. Pretty much "what I've heard", and read, is collected info from different articles all over the net (such as one from the Register), other articles over the last couple months like THIS one, and different reps and friends that work with both ATI and nVidia.

As a matter of fact, I did get the chance to I talk with an nVidia rep today, and we got to talking about the card briefly. He pointed me to Endgadgets SPECS article. Some of what he mentioned is also mentioned in an article the Inquirer did HERE that hit it pretty much on the head, including the bit about the split shader (however different than what I first mentioned).

As for the R600, I'm pretty much going on what I've heard from friends that work for ATI (only 1 is a tech), and a ton of articles on the net. The only thing I know for sure is that the card is a fully unified unit (similar to the one in the Xbox 360). Other than that they are pretty much keeping tight lipped. That's old info though as I haven't been able to talk with them much lately due to the merger (that brought about an almost instant NDA type of curtain) other than to find out that two of them got laid off.

Well I don't believe everything I hear and quite a bit of time I don't believe what I read (especially online). I have to see things for myself as I believe its the only way to know for sure.

As for buying a card like this, I would have to wait till multiple reviews came out on multiple sites.
