SATA may replace ATAPI as mainstream for DVD burners in 2007

Source: DigiTimes
________
Although advanced technology attachment packet interface (ATAPI) is the mainstream interface standard for optical disc drives (ODDs) currently, serial ATA (SATA) stands a chance of replacing the former in the second half of 2007, according to sources in Taiwan's ODD manufacturing industry.

SATA has been adopted for several DVD-burner models, such as the Sony AW-Q160S, Asustek DRW-1814BLT and DVD-E616A3T, the sources indicated. Samsung, Pioneer and the Taiwan-based Lite-On IT and BenQ will launch SATA DVD burners this quarter, the sources noted.

SATA burners has been out for quite some time yes, but not a lot. What the article is talking about, is the major part of dvd burners in 2007 will be SATA and about time if you ask me

Give me a Pioneer 112L with proper SATA

I had a plextor Sata DVD burner, only issue i ran into is alot of Sata Controller really REALLY don't like anything other then hardrives and get really confused and messed up.

I went back to the IDE drive till the vast majority of sata controller actually work without hitches.

GNetX is on a distinguished road

SATA burners have been next to impossible to get hold of. As Erroneus said, about (something covered in blood)* time!

*I don't wanna offend anyone!

I live in a part of the canada that is next to impossible to get anything recent in good supply. The DVD SATA burners have been available for roughly year now.

Same here. I have yet to see any real performance difference so far. Since there are issues like the one you mentioned, it's just not worth changing.. at least not yet.

BTW, one really big issue (at least for me) is backup. None of the backup programs I use, such as Ghost or Acronis, see the SATA burner.. well.. properly. The only way to backup a machine in this case is to use an IDE burner. Even if I do a backup there is no way to easily recover that backup unless I do the reverse. In my business, backups are a necessity. Saves me time having to reinstall the machine if a customer screws somthing up (and they always do), hardware dies, or so on. So, until that get's fixed (I haven't looked into it lately though.. so it might be) I'll be staying away from them for a bit.

I only used the sata drive in my own rig to see how it was coming..

i've still got a Blue Ray DVD-Burner on back order, but i'd got it in limbo until i can get a guarantee that it'll play BR disks,

Plus i was informed that the first BR Drives would IDE, 2nd generation would all be sata.
