Royalty agreement reached for UK digital music downloads

Record companies and songwriters in the United Kingdom have reached an agreement over royalties covering online digital music sales, including digital music sales and mobile phone ringtones. For the three-year duration of the agreement, songwriters will receive 8 percent of revenues for each song downloaded. The settlement leaves the existing temporary royalty rate unchanged, and is a compromise between the artists, who had demanded a 12 percent royalty rate, and the music companies, who were holding out for 6.5 percent.
