Even as PCs and home video-game systems become friendlier to casual players, the common cellphone is morphing into a device intended to entice hard-core gamers.

Mobile versions of top-selling console games already are available or in the works. Activision's Call of Duty 2 is one of the most downloaded games for Verizon subscribers, and Sony PlayStation titles Ratchet & Clank and SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs are out on multiple cellular systems. Electronic Arts plans to release Madden Football2007 Mobile on Aug. 22, the same day the game becomes available for game systems and PCs.
