The increasing popularity of expensive portable media players and the need for small, highly portable listening devices to accompany these players has prepared the market for companies like Shure. A walk on any city street will make it very clear that the large over-the-ear headphones of yesteryear are no longer used when people are on the go. The iPod's ubiquitous white earbuds pushed the entire portable audio market in this direction but in doing so they have opened the door to some serious competition.
I have always been surprised at the number of iPod users who use the included earbuds. For some reason this seems to be the one headphone which comes with a product that people are OK with, generally included headphones are quite disappointing. Even if you are OK with the earbuds, it seems strange that more people would not want to either get something higher-end which can match the quality of the iPod or get something which fits better. Even if none of these reasons apply, I would think that buying another set of headphones would be popular just so that the people around you would not know you are using an iPod.
