ATI set to soft launch X1800GTO tomorrow

"ATI has decided to launch its X1800GTO card on the first day of the big Cebit tech-fest in Hangover. The press (us!) and especially Nvidia will be moaning, as ATI won't do the hard launch. It is very close to hard launch but it won't start selling the cards tomorrow, it will take a week or two.

ATI got burned few times with hard launches, as some people were selling some boards before ATI actually announced it. Once you send your cards to dozen partners and stores it is not easy to plug the leaks. Therefore, it decided what it decided, but I think it would have been better off to let its partners show off the cards then launch it roughly ten days later, when it's ready to place them on shelves. Well, it was not my call to make anyway."
