stupid tech questions
here are the stupid ones i've heard commonly
1. "if I put in a psone game in my ps2, will it make it looks like ps2 graphics? why not?!"
2. "can't I just drag my old microsoft office directory onto my new computer so it is installed?"

Those are pretty good ones.
I heard about a lady who called tech support about using floppies to install a program. When asked what was the problem, the lady told tech support that after she got the 2nd Floppy in the drive, there's no more room for the THIRD one.

Here's a few that I hear at work from time to time:
"I filled in the form. Do I click on 'Continue' or 'Cancel' at the bottom?"
"It says my password has a capital and a number. Does it need a capital number?"

I won't embarass the family member who asked me this some time ago, but, in reference to the odd/even staggered days for using lawn sprinklers - based on house numbers, I was asked if 'her' address was odd or even. The numbers in 'her' address were:
3576
I told 'her' that she was 'even'.
'Her' reply: "Well, with all those odd numbers in there I wasn't sure."

On the Compaq FAQ:
Compaq FAQ: Where do I find the "Any" key on my keyboard? (FAQ2859)
The term "any key" does not refer to a particular key on the keyboard. It simply means to strike any one of the keys on your keyboard or handheld screen.

I have this teacher who asks me questions about her computer and all, and one question kinda scared me.
Teacher: I have a question. How come some of these links are purple, and the others are blue?
Me: Links turn purple after you click on them.
Teacher: Ok, I was worried that it was a virus or something like that.

I heared that they were seriously considering substituting the "Press any key." in ther manuals with "Press Enter." as they were getting quite a few of those questions.

I commonly get customers asking me where they're from when our webpage asks them to select they're state and city.
Second, setting up email, the part that says 'enter your name' I often get asked what to put in there as well.
I'm not sure if it's people just not reading what they're supposed to do, are scared to do something wrong, or just lack that little something called common sense...

"I picked up these HP Ink cartridges, they were more expensive so i figured they were of higher quality, why does my cannon printer not work, and it's making a nasty racket" - A user had phoned me... quite disturbing....
~> New caller "I keep trying to turn the computer on, but nothing appears to happen, theres a bit of a buzz sound and then shortly after it sounds like something is slightly popping."
~> me "Does a light come on, i would suggest you not try to turn it on again just now, please tell me more about your computer, does it have a model number/name, who's it built by?"
~> New caller "Oh sorry, i've been pushing this button about a hundred times, i'll quit now, should i turn it off?"
~> me "Yes please, turn it off, and provide me with some details about the computer"
~> New Caller "It's a Samsung Syncmaster, (xxx)DF"
~> me "That's your monitor, have you been pushing the power button on it?"
~> New Caller "Yes, shouldn't it start when i push the button?"
~> me "The monitor will start, but it'll go into "sleep" mode if there is no signal, can you please look for a more slender box and push the power button on it, and turn on the monitor as well?"
~> New Caller "Ok, monitor is on, where would i find the slender box?"
~> me "Should be relatively close, perhaps under the desk or of to the side, i wouldn't expect it to be any further then 3 feet from the monitor, perhaps look in the desk itself, it may be consealed"
~> New Caller "I don't really see anything.......... oh wait, it's in the cupboard here, what do i press?"
~> Me "There should be at least one relatively large button, if there are more try each and wait a bit after each to see if it worked, you should see lights and fans spinning up when you've hit the right one"
~> New Caller "Ok, i think it's on...................... the computer flickered wait a second....... Oh, looks like it's working. Thank you"
~> me "your welcome"
~> oh boy.....

My favorite is when someone comes to you, and doesn't give you the full story untill you've already wasted half an hour trying to fix the thing. The other day, a co-worker came to me with his company laptop. He said that it wouldn't boot. He informed me he had recently installed Windows XP. Well, I gave the thing a go, asking the typical questions "How old is it", "Have you updated the BIOS", "drivers", "did you drop it", "Did it crash" "anything else you can think of" etc. etc. etc...
Well, after doing what I can, getting it up to at least the post screen, it froze. I got into the BIOS and messed around, and basically spent about 45mins. Finally I blew out the heat sink and masses of dust came spewing out. I knew what had happened. He looked at it and said "Oh, I wonder if that is what caused the thing to smoke..." He than finally remembered that right before it wouldn't start up it got really hot, crashed, and began to smoke...

I ALWAYS open up a case and check for dust bunnies whenever I work on a computer. The other day I had one that had dust bunnies clogged in between the cooling fins on the CPU.
(Note to Self: Remember to take these things OUTSIDE before using the compressed air. )

Anyone remember my post with pictures showing the results of a PSU fire i had..
the cpu heatsink where so packed with crap the cpu fan couldn't spin... the PSU was nearly as bad.. and while fixing it, the psu caught on fire!
I could put it out so i ripped it outa the case and threw it outside in the snow...
Anyone remember that?
