Scrap is gold.
You think that's bad, you should see some of the stories out of the old Soviet Union about scrap-poachers...they make the railroad theft look logical.

When my family lived in the Phillipines, there were people that stole cable (for the copper) out of the ground using water buffalo. True story, ask my dad.

BUWHAHAHAHH!!!!!!!!! I like that one. HEHE. I remember when I was in band and one night during a basketball our pep band went into the band room and reversed the setup of the chairs and cases and moving shelves. We basically turned the room 180 degrees with anything that could be moved. Our band director told us he thought he went to the wrong room... HEHE. And also in band we had 100's of extra metal and platic chairs and music stand in this one room. We took all the chairs and threw them (literally) in one corner as well as the stands. Took up like 10 cubic feet of space. So when you walked into that room it looked like it (the room) had been tilted and all the shit fell into the corner of the room.

Copper.
When I was still working electrical, there used to be a lot of problems with the Projects in Chicago. People kept stealing all the removable wire/buss that was made of copper to sell for scrap.

I have a friend who's brother worked road construction. He used to get the old spools of wire that suspended stop lights. We'd throw the spool into a bon fire with some of the wire on there cuz it would burn fucky color and the smells would make us woozy (HEHE). But nevertheless. After several bonfires the leftover copper in the pit was scraped up and taken to a recyclery for scrap. They made a couple hundred dollars off of couple hundred pounds of copper. Nice.
