My connection

Ok so i am with NTL for my ISP not sure how wide spread they are but you UK guys will know whom i mean. They seem more expensive than most places but i was happy with them. That is until they decided to kindly upgrade my connection speed to 1MB (from 300Kbps) which you would think is something to be happy about as they arent charging me any more but they sneakily put in a 3GB download limit (which isnt enough for me)

I am wondering first of all what would happen if i was to go over my limit is it most likely that they would just stop the downloads until that month is over \ would they charge extra?

Also i have found another company i like the sound of called PlusNet does anyone use or know of them ? They have a 2MB connection with no download limits for 14.99 fixed payment, which is much better than what i receive at the minute. Although they have a connection the same speed but with a contention ratio of 30:1 instead of 50:1 and its 21.99.

I am wondering if the lower contention ratio would be worth the money also how do i find out what contention ratio i am on at the minute - i have checked the NTL site and had a quick look through control panel but i dont know much about networks and connections so i found nothing helpful

um, your best bet is that mig or Z reads this

all I can tell you is that I've been with tiscali a couple years now, and they've been great to me.
earlier in the year I signed up to 1mb unlimited with free phone calls for £17.99 a month, and a couple weeks later they bumped me up to 2mb unlimited for no extra charge because I'd been 'a loyal customer'.

can't say fairer than that really

as for ntl, my over-riding thought (which is probably wrong) is that if they can afford to advertise on the front of footy shirts, they probably charge too much.

lol yes, a little like uhm - Microsoft

Anyways i was just looking around and since i use solely my mobile for calling i just need the broadband and someone at work recomended the company PlusNet and they seem ok 2mb unlimited for 14.99

If i am to purchase from them, if i use my current modem so its more of an upgrade \ move to them rather than a whole new customer they require my CLI number - where do i find out that ?

I'm on the PlusNet Premier package which is £21.99 per month. The 30:1 contention ratio applies to inside the plusnet network, not the BT one.

As far as stability goes Ive never really had any trouble with plusnet (ive been connected to them for about a year now). Speeds are fine as well. Thier customer support is excellent in my opinion also.

I would go for the premier package over the plus package as the plus package have idle timeouts once they impliment it (you get disconnected after 30mins if the connection is not active, but you can reconnect straight away) Take a look at adslguide.org forums for more info on that as im not 100% on it.

As for unlimited bandwidth, there is a catch which is the sustainable usage policy. You can find more info about it here:

http://www.plus.net/support/adsl/sus...ge_guide.shtml

There is also bandwidth capping on usenet when you download over 15gb a month.

If you need to know anything else, either reply here or pm me, im happy to help.

EDIT: found some info on how they manage different bandwidth types

Gold – Web browsing, email, PlusTalk
Silver - Gaming, VPN, network services, other VoIP services, external text Usenet servers, FTP, SSH, Instant Messaging, IRC, other TCP/UDP/other traffic, P2P/Usenet for PAYG/Lite accounts
Bronze - P2P for all accounts bar PAYG/Lite, external binary Usenet, all binary Usenet for Broadband Plus

i think that the 3gb download is for you're account only, but the is also a set amount for the area the network is connected to.. (you're local area)....as you say you wonder if the is a charge (£3 for an extra 1gig?),you would possibly get a popup to ask if you would agree to this charge. If not accepted then that is when the downloads may cease for the remainder of that month.

but i not sure if im correct here but if the is some left you may get away with being charged.Just may depend on how many users in the same area goes over the cap.

Thanks for the replys everyone.

I am still confused about the part where during registration it asks me about 'Which telephone number i would like to use for my ADSL' i'll snoop around my connection tonight and perhaps call up and ask some questions.
