Poor Kinetic
As a result of his quest to build the ultimate PC (and to keep up
with me since I recently overtook him in our little family
competition ) he bought a new super dooper HS/fan to keep
his CPU cool. It was a Volcano 7+. After fitting it to his chip we
fired it up but all we got was a horrible burning smell !! but
worst of all, no post ! After changing his XP2000 CPU that
he won on DH for his old XP1700 he had before, it would boot up,
but the CPU would only run in safe mode (1.1 Ghz)
If any of you had noticed he hasn't been around here lately it's
because the tears that flowed spilled over onto his
keyboard and that's fecked as well now.
Serously though, he is really depressed that such a simple thing
like fitting a new HS/fan could cause so much misery so have a bit
of sympathy for him and wish him and his computer a speedy
recovery. It's looking like his motherboard got fried somehow,
but if any of you have any other ideas as to what could have
happened I'm sure Kinetic would be very grateful

I feel really guilty about this, honest, I do !
Mr Kinetic knows I would never deliberately sabotage his PC

Poor guy... I have only twice in my life destroyed a processor. Once was by accident... I didnt know that you had to put foam around a peltier to seal it off :O That didn't last long, and the last time was actually on purpose... A customer wanted to know if a serious HSF was really needed on a 1.3GHz Duron... (after all it is ONLY 1.3GHz!) So, I yanked the cooler off while it was running. HEY! It made an impression! But that was on purpose. .... What ever it is that is keeping his sytem down.. I hope he figures it out soon! Good luck!

Best-o-luck Kinetic...
...I'll try putting in a good word with the PC gods on your behalf. Downtime sucks, hang in there and make it better.

I'm back! After the worst couple of days in my life (comp wise) I'm finally back to speed. Forni worked tirelessly to feck up my comp but, credit where credits due, he also worked tirelessly to get it running again. Had to fork out for a new mobo http://www.msicomputer.com/product/d...p?model=K7N2-L as my Asus A7V333 gave up the ghost along with the xp2000 I won on DH In a serious state of depression I also bought an xp2200. Now all I've got to do is get some money together before my visa statement arrives I wish I could pass on some advice in hindsight but at the moment I'm just glad to be back online. Not sure what went wrong with the Volcano 7+ but I don't want to risk installing it again. Anyone who wants to take it off my hands to try it, if you p.m me with your details I'll send it to ya free of charge.

Kinetic, I recieved the HSF, after looking at it for a couple of minutes... I realized what was wrong.
The clip that holds the HSF to the ZIF socket was reversed.... Facing the wrong way. So the indent that is made in the HSF to clear the ZIF socket cam.... didnt, resulting in a small amount of air space between the core, and the HSF.
Sorry bro, but that is why your 2000+ died. The HSF was not sitting flat on it.

Not exactly what I wanted to hear but 'c'est la vie' I'm not one to bear grudges but just wait 'til I get my f**kin' hands on forni.

I fried my 1.4 tbird... RIP... also did not have the hsf on just right. Had bought my first bolt on to mobo alpha pal 8045 and did not have it adjusted just right so as one corner of cpu core wasnt touching just right.. *poof* there went mr. 1.4 Replaced with current xp1700.
and those volcano 7 have a rep for being a bear to get off and on. Many a cpu cracked because of their crappy clip!!
was that xp2000 new from retail store?? if so, warranty should warrant a replacement.... though not technically I suppose since it was human error (spider error rather) that killed the chip and not mfgr defect....

CPU HSF
So I'm not the only one who gets nervous whenever they have to take their HSF off their CPU or put a new one on? It's one of the most nerve-wracking things I do with my 'puters. I always end up fighting the damned clips on with a screwdriver while praying that I don't slip and cut something important on the mobo. (And I have a few good dings on me mobo near me CPU, but no damage. <knock-wood!> )

Have to agree with you there Dig, I'm sure they could come up with a better design than
the present one. Ok, I admit what happened to Kinetic chip was my fault ( the only way
to learn is by making mistakes, right? ) but the whole process of installing the HSF is a bit
like you said, close your eyes and hope for the best

Geez....I have slipped and nailed the mobo a couple times. But when I have my power supply in the computer I have to use a letter opener to put the HSF back on. There is no room for a screw driver cuz of the handle.

Piece of advice: ALWAYS remove your power supply before trying to change/adjust your HSF! It's hard enough to do it when the mobo ain't in your case, trying to do it around a PS is just sheer craziness! (Yeah, I've done it a couple of times that way too...to "save time" Now me PS is permanently mounted outside me case and it works MUCH better! )

No, takes too long. When I was unlocking the 2100 last month I was mounting the processor every 10 minutes.

yeah but if y'all overclockers used decent hsf's, you wouldn't have to fight it
mine i could take off and put back on in under 30 secs, ps or no ps
(and mine's a coolermaster, btw)

I can take mine off without a problem and in a flash...it's just I have to use a letter opener. And my HSF is pretty decent. Yeah it isn't all copper...But come on. It's a damn good mediocre HSF.
