I think I have heard of this as well, but that it was destroyed by internal intrigue not disease, as if there were a British spy, wheres William Wallace when ya need him?

it was the failure of the Darien scheme which resulted in a hand full of land owners a selling us down the river to the tune of English gold against the wishes of the people which resulted in mass riots, murders and 2 cival wars
