Question about upgrade-serial ATA
I am planning to do a major upgrade in the near future
I've already picked the motherboard I want to base it on. My
question concerns serial ATA. For a few more £'s I can get this
board with the serial ATA option. I know the drives aren't
available yet ( any ideas when they will be ? ) but I'm wondering
whether there will be any advantage in waiting for the drives to
come out or whether to stick with an ATA133 drive ?

S-ATA
The question boils down to wether or not you want to upgrade AGAIN when ATA is no longer avaliable. However they are planning on S-ATA2 and 3 so you might want to wait for the 2nd generation. Your call.

Thanks for the links. It seems like the only advantage, for now at
least, seems to be the smaller cables/connectors. I'm
gonna stick with good old IDE for now. You can already get nice,
neat round cables instead of the old, flat ribbons

You remind me of the time I bought a mobo with USB support, two years ago - that mobo still works in my nieces comp, but I still don't have any USB devices.

When I bought my present board, an ASUS A7V133, it came with
2 USB prts as standard and an extra little card to upgrade in the
furture to 4 ports, which I thought I would never use. I ended up
fitting the extra card. Ive got my printer, scanner, mouse and
camera all with USB connections

I would say get the motherboard with the Serial ATA unless you are expecting to upgrade your motherboard again before Serial ATA drives come out, a few months from now (or maybe Feb, I have been hearing later though...), and if you are going to get a hard drive, wait until Serial ATA drives have been benched unless you are in a hurry...
