Indeed, its a good cause but I dont like the way Geldof has went about it, highlighting african poverty by having a load of overpaid white singers preach to people, yeah thats not patronising.

It's also a shame that the whole point of these concerts is never going to be realised, while Africa is ruled by corrupt governments, while even the democracies (Like Thabo Mbeki of South Africa) are complicit of the crimes being committed against the people in the Sudan and Zimbabwe, the G8 can reduce debt, help with more aid, but people will still die when the church is still allowed to preach against condoms, while governments still siphon off aid money, while ethnic cleansing still goes on on genocidal scales, all these need to be addressed in a far more urgent manner, yet never seem to be mentioned by Geldof and his friends, maybe he doesnt see the bigger picture.

I don't know much about politics or what goes on in the world but i am sure Geldolf is aware of the bigger picture. He is one of few people that you can't deny actual believes and is in charities for all the right reasons.

I agree with you in a way that it is a shame it has to come from mutli million making music artists, however the world is pretty much ruled by commercialism and celebrities so they are the only people the mass community will really listen to. If it was a bunch of polititions doing a discussion \ event about this there wouldn't be any where near the amount of publicity and following.

I think it's all for a good cause but there are just some flaws, the most annoying part for me is the way people come out and say how horrible it is and we should do something yet the only reason they feel bad about it is because its being publicised, without Live8 they wouldn't care, or atleast would never say anything.

I wasn't aware that there churchs preached against condoms \ protection. It makes little sense that in such awful environments they bring more children into it but human instinct for survival is to mate (as with all animals)

So what else would you say was the SOURCE of the problems?

You'd be suprised, In certain African countries, the Chruch actively campaigns against protection, and there have been multiple stories of the Chrurch saying that condoms CAUSE AIDS, which is very scary.

But, although Geldof may know the bigger picture, he seems to be publising the non controvosial elements of his cause more, like debt relief and more aid, rather than mass reform within Africa, and indeed a lot of the world.

The problem, and its source is simple, greed, greed from corporations, governments, the rich, in the developed world, the greed exists to the same, if not to a higher extent, but because there is more to go round, the amount of poverty caused is much lower, and more worryingly, hidden from general society, but in Africa in particular, there isnt enough to go round in the first place, so the greed of the few destroys the many, and it cant be hidden as much as they try. (Sudan, zimbabwe, clear examples of cover ups that failed)

This may sound radical, but the UN should take control of most of Africa, run it FOR the people, get the continent on track, then return it to the people (Via democracy) when the major issues of AIDS, famine and lack of infrastrcuture are solved.

I agree with stop_it's point of view..... but I'm not exactly a political person.Im all for help for the poorer country's but at the same time can't help but feel at the same time when the country's involved has caused a good majority of the poverty is by the government involved.....look at Zimbabwe for example.

But non the less,the BBC coverage of this live8 is top notch.. some great performers have been on already.....actually makes a change that the is something entertaining on the (crap) BBC for a change.

The 30 second delay is to cut any swearing/bad bahaviour to be cut out, AOL obviously taking no chances.

Pink floyd were great, nice to see dave gilmour can still bend the notes and improvise. Looks like we wont have guitar solos anymore if the live 8 show was anything to go by. So many poor or average guitar players. Even Slash fluffed parts of the velvet revolver set.

But it was for a good cause, overall entertaining.

Pink Floyd were amazing, I'm a huge Dave Gilmour fan! Check out 'Raise My Rent' for classic Gilmour guitar Alan if you've not already heard it! Didn't catch all of the show but the Scissor Sisters were pretty good as were The Who!

yeah ive most all of the floyd stuff, great band, superlative musicans, have to admit I never thought id see the day when waters played bass again next to gilmour as they hate each others guts but im glad they did it for the event. The scissor sisters were cool too, quite surprised they were that good live.
