hahaha
its binary.
computers use binary, and only binary. there is no A, there is no B. there is no 2, there is no 3.

Actually there is no 0 or 1 either, just on or off right?

Use Windows calculator and converts the numbers from binary to decimal (one at a time).
Now find an ASCII table and match up the cooresponding charachters and bingo.

Ahh, but what happens to the 0's and 1's when it it is read and stored in system memory?

It's a lot easier to change it to HEX, and go from there. We used Hex core dumps all the time when I was programming IBM 360s in assembler language. Hex was like a second language for me then

anythign can be converted to binary, via various conversions, for numbers either a 2^k conversion or a base10-pass through conversion is done, for characters, it's done using either ASCII or Unicode(unicode is only 8bit, ascii is 32 or 48, I forget).
Now then, for actual CODE it's done on a compiler level and the code is passed through an itnermediary compiler and converted to ASM or Machine code, which si in trun converted to binary.
This keeps the compters "cache" of possibly data from being too big. For example, binary requires the computer recognize a 1, and a 0. Hex would require it recognize 0-9, and A-F.
OK....you all now know just how much of a nerd I am....but feel free to keep askign questions if you like, and if need be, I'll make some curcuit diagrams for converter ICs in paint

Actually, converting to hex is common, but any base 2 system is just as easy to convert 2, be it octal, hex, or some proprietary system (base 4, basy 32, etc)
A 2^k conversion si used for those and si fairly simple to do if you know what yer lookin at and how number systems work.

I thought at the very basic level, it was either "transistor off" or "transistor on" in other words, electricity flowing, or electricity not flowing. At the lowest physical level. Off is "0", on is "1"....

I'd agree with you bwx. Transistors are switches and switches can be in either 1 of 2 states, 'on' or 'off'

man i haven't looked at binary or hex since MOS school for the Marines. they gave us crash course on binary, hex, converting the numbers. we used it all for ip address. thats making my brain think...
