Speaking of free PC's...
Why the hell would you want a free Compaq or Toshiba Notebook? I mean, beggars can't be choosers, but to offer the most cheaply constructed brand names on the market(IMO) for free seems like a slap in the face.
We've actually had a few issues at my place of employment with them damn spamming bastards lately...I wonder if it's all the same outfit?
Even BETTER - I got an e-mail in my yahoo! account about two minutes ago asking me if I wanted a free iPod or a free PSP. I get one of these about every couple of hours...

Even if the products in question are free, and even if they are in good condition, your chances of getting one are really bad, almost like winning a raffle at a school party or something.
They're not "free" as such, they're merely put there to generate a certain level of hype and publicity for the site in question, so that when one person out a couple of million get's a "free" artifact, he can go around the whole world shouting that that site/domain gives "free" stuff away for "free" and eventually they'll have quite a good number of loyal customers buying their low grade shyte on a regular basis, patrons if you will.
Either that or there's strings attatched, lots of strings attatched to the free goods in question.

Compaq isnt so bad. My brother has a very nice compaq laptop. I'd consider buying one after how nice his has been.
Toshiba also makes great laptops. Most of the companies around in seattle have dumped Dell now and use Toshiba. This is not for cost reasons because Toshiba is more expensive. It is because Toshiba laptops come with metal casing and dont break when you drop them. at CTI, they walk around with their laptops open doing work while they walk...Theres at least one trip up a day, and the laptops keep going. Was it the same with Dells? No. The dells shattered to bits. It was rather sad.
Now obviously you can like or dislike the companies...but I'd say that none of them are really bad companies. Toshiba has some nice offerings, but too expensive for my taste. Compaq has some awesome powerhouses, but slightly too large for my taste. Every laptop I've seen so far has not been to my liking, but thats because I have unrealistic desires.

I use an old toshiba at work, it is the best lappy I have ever used. The thing is practically indestructable and runs like a champ. Driver support is great. Hell, I occationally use an OLD toshiba satellite (like p1 90mhz), and other than a burnt monitor, the thing chuggs along win95 pretty damn good.

yeah I got a Toshiba 133mhz under my bed. That thing was awesome for playing VCDs and doing some web browsing. It ran 98 quite well.
Now I have a 500mhz laptop. Not the best, but its servicable.
