I actually joined a gym
After gaining over 5stone over the last 2&1/2 years I finally bit the bullet and signed up to a gym membership. (getting married in the summer and my fiance has more or less ordered my lardy ass onto the treadmill - thats me pwned)
Been going now for a couple of weeks and although I feel like the fatest guy in the place but I really enjoy it. I haven't bothered with weight training or anything yet - purely cardio and its quite hard work although not as hard as I first thought it would be.
After just 2 weeks my fitness has increased dramatically and with the change in my diet, I have lost nearly half a stone already. Hurrah for me!
Anyway I've been enjoying telling everyone so you lot dont escape either.

I hope to be getting back to the gym this month. I'm biking pretty hard, so I'm staying in shape, but I'm not as strong as I used to be...

Thats good for you keep it up!!! I work at a health club and get a free membership and I don't use it... I know its sad but I think its because its free. So I think i don't have to use it and when i stop working there I will feel like I should have done something.

Resistance training is necessary- Muscle mass speeds up your metabolism and burns more calories while you are doing nothing at all- even sleeping.
I would go for resistance training and screw the cardio.. because actually when you do resistance training (low reps, high weight) you are going to get a good cardio workout just doing that anyway, plus you get the added benefit of of more muscle mass..

Yeah I'll be starting the resistance training in the next couple of weeks. I just want to get my basic fitness up first. I have been a smoker for over 10 years and just kicked the habit for the second time a couple of months ago.
How many reps would you be talking about mate? They explained to me that I should start with 15 reps with the last 2-3 being the ones that take a lot of effort.

I once did that, too. (Joined a gym.) Most money I've ever wasted in my life on one thing. (Cause I only went twice.)
Good luck to you, though. Hope you stick with it better than I did.

Bread is one of the things I have cut out of my diet. I ate quite a lot of it which apparently is rather bad for you.

Thanks for the support Dyre. One advantage I have is that my fiance and my sister both joined at the same time so I dont have to go on my own. That helps with motivation.

Yeah Logla, it is a good idea to get a little fit before starting the heavy stuff, and it is important to warm up before your workout too... They used to say that stretching was important before warming up, but lately the trend has been to warm up first (on a stationary bike or whatever) - and THEN stretch out- then do your routine..
I would say pick a weight that you can do 10 reps with. benching with free-weights maybe 150 LBS or so? MAybe curling with one arm, 30 to 50 lbs? Maybe less or more depending on your current strength..
It is important to let the muscles rest a few days after you work them like that though, you will be sore, etc.. that is when the muscles are rebuilding and regenerating, and when they recover, they get stronger, and bigger a little bit every time.
when I was lifting I got to the point where I was doing ten to 15 reps with 186 pounds without a spotter (benching)... and curling 60lbs 10 to 15 reps with one arm... It takes a while to get up to that level, but less time than you think.
There are some really good supplements out there that help you work out more intensely and also to help you recover faster- totally legal and not "steroids" at all.
It is important to work your hams and quads (legs) and your lats, delts, and triceps..
Actually the tricep had 3 heads and that muscle makes up 2/3 of your arm size and muscle mass. There are a bunch of ways to work that muscle group- Behind your head in an upright position, bent over with elbow in and extending your back, etc, etc...
http://www.bodybuildingforyou.com/tr...se-workout.htm
Maybe there is a trainer there that can help you make out a weekly routine, so you get proper rest and also maximize your workout time.. it is different for everyone, but a trainer can help you get started for sure.
Good luck! I envy you- after 3 back surgeries, I am very limited in what I can do, can't lift like I used to..

Heh, I'm in great shape, with no real diet or exercise routine, though most days I get at least an hour or so of exercise in...
I don't know how people do without exercise, if I go a few days without any, I start sleeping badly, and start feeling crappy after about a week.

I've never heard of whole wheat bread being bad for you. I've heard of it being fattening from it's high amount of carbs though.

Thats um...not good if your bride-to-be isnt happy with you the way that you are. Isnt that sortof disapointing that she cant just love you for who you are?
on the other hand, there is something to be said about eatting right and excercising. Oh well

That's good to hear man. My dad also recently joined a gym, and he's been so stoked about it ever since, goes to it every day after work and comes back all sweaty and smiling. I think I got to get to the gym too, I do have a bit of a port-belly from sitting in front of the PC almost all the time (and occasionally T.V.), some people have even asked me if it's a beer belly!!!
But better fit than in bad health, so maybe I should join up or at the very least, do some home excersises to keep my weight down. My little brother, who's fatter than me and has even got little breasts, has all of a sudden started doing push ups and things when we're just chilling in the living room watching T.V. or when a friend comes over to visit and is talking to him in the bed room...I tell ya, the way he's going, I think he'll be able to beat me up pretty soon.
He can already do like 50 push ups none stop, and I can do...wait, I don't know how many I can do.

Wholewheat is good for you. Just whenever I think of bread I always think of white bread - lots of stodgy starchy stuff in white bread.

Oops - forgot the smilies. It was meant light hartedy. Just with the way women get with weddings like "everything has to be perfect or their will be blood spilt" type of attitudes toward the big day. Hell, even I want to look best on the big day
We both put on a lot of weight since we first met. She has always battled with her weight but was at her slimmest when we first started dating. Of course the dating ruined all her hard work - eating and drinking out, watching a movie with popcorn and candy etc. It all adds up.

yeah and if you're dating, i've noticed alot of girls not feeling as much of a need to attract males(if they got one that they're happy with, then all is well so why bother?)
My ex was getting kinda chubby and then after we broke up she just became super thin and got herself a few new boyfriends(yes...a few. LOL)
