Car repair Advise needed
I have a 1992 grand am with a broken passanger side motor mount...
it's also leaking anti freeze but it's one of the hoses or something only leaks when hot and from the verry front... all new hoses and radiator about 1-2 years ago...(not my bigest consern...)
Motor mounts are cheap as dirt but how easy would it to do your self?
How much do you think it'd cost to get fixed? I'm going to call around for prices tomarrow but hell if I can do it myself that would be ideal. I do my own brakes, tunes ups, themo stats, alternators, etc, etc, etc....
I'm clueless when it come to motor mounts... thier car is a pain in the arse to get to anything becouse it sets so low to the ground and thier isn't alot of room room around the engine etc... it's all packed pretty tight compaired to all the other vehickles i've owned...

as far as the leaking water goes, it's probably the radiator that's cracked towards the bottom, or even the resivoir is cracked. Also check the hoses. Hoses SHOULD be replaced every other year (even though many car owners replace them when they're bust, or about to go bust).
if you want to do the motor mount yourself, i'd say look into buying a car manual on do-it-yourself type thing you can pick up at an auto shop like Kragen, auto-zone, or pepboys.

i dont think the hose is hard to replace, but like cd said, get a do-it-yourself manual and the parts you need. if your experienced on car repairs should be a small job.

thats the costly part if you dont have the pully... if you dont do that part yourself i suggest getting your timing belt changed while they are down there

in the first pic, you can easily see one of the motor mounts. it's the whitish looking thing directly behind the oil filter. With the engine out of the car, changing all the motor mounts was really easy. They came right off w/the compressor.

motor mounts involve having to lift your motor even just a bit. You need the tools to do this, and typically, it doesn't require much (some older vehicles don't take much time AT ALL to replace motor mounts)
imo, the leak like everyone else mention could be anything, typically, if it a leak around were the hose connects, just apply a little bit more presure, use a clamp of sort, something...
IMO, it shouldn't take any garage more then 4 hours to do motor mounts in a 1991 car, ...

if it's a leak, it's best to have the part(s) replaced. Trust me on that.....what's why i had to pull the engine out of my car (pix above to prove that ). Hoses are cheap.....like no more than $20 per hose. If it's the radiator, then it will be a little more. Resivoirs shouldn't be all that expensive either.

Unless you have a motor hoist like that, I wouldn't even try doing motor mounts yourself

Shit .. parts places around here and wanting to chage 50-60 for the mount... and the repair shops like 120+! with like 130+ labor!
I'm thinking this is well with "many" attept to do this myself hell to
to lift the motor my dad say put a block of wood and jack underneeth,
the motor to lift it enough it's not like it's got to be removed
there is a upper and a lower.. this one the lower so.... I'll have to block up the car 1st to be able to get under becouse with this car everything easier to acess from under GM pricks! LOL! anyways....
I'll have to talk and see if my dad will help me.... other wise i'll have i'll have to pay to get it done... hell if the part salvageable it wouldn't couse me didly to get it welded then I could reuse the part...

best of luck with that. I get to replace a heater core on the camaro as soon as I buy it
your task seems a bit more daunting, though

here is some images mabe you guys will see more of whats going on but you cant see much fromthe top and the same goes underneeth..
there is a upper and lower motar mount on the pos i'm told as well an a
tranmission mount... well the engine is whats heaveing when I put in revers
moives way to much .. also make a vibration/ sound and every time i go up or
down a little bit i hear a (clump hinda noiseif not carefull )metal hitting metal/vibration...

passanger side in frount of the tire this is only on one side I have no cluse what it's supposed to look like is anything wrong here?
Can't really see the lower....
can't tell if thats a mount down there or not
will have to jack it up to see..... can't get under
again passengerside
Don't woorry about geen the mess I was a little messy pouring in the anti freeze in the dark
The big plate there look looks like motor mount to me
But you see this little mount / guide i've circuled defonatle something bugerd
passengerside / almost above/inline with tirewell
The radiatoir leaking on the driver side i assume the hose i cant get to or the radiator (wich should be under warrenty)....

motor mounts are not hard to get at large junkyards..lots of Grand Am cars there, typically they are pieced together and sold in Mexico, so dont despair..you can find parts all over.
If you can get a cheap jack and build or make a crib for the motor, put the jack under it and lift carefully, that might take the pressure off the old mount...simply slip the old one out and check for the chassie part to see if it needs a weld...sometimes they do...(uigggh).
slip the new parts in...make sure the b | |
