eDonkey
This program sucks, I really wanted to like it, but I have found almost zero helpful resources, and the server system seems to work about 1% of the time for me. Any and all good servers either won't connect or just pause and never connect. If anyone has had any success with this program, kudos to you.

I used to use eDonkey and never had any problems, then overnet came out and I switched to that...give that one a try instead!

some ISPs also block the ports used to access clients like edonkey.

I tried both, perhaps I'm being a bit impatient, but I used overnet, and it didn't seem to get me anywhere either. I was on either one for about two hours today and couldn't even get into people's queues.
ISP blockage isn't an issue here @ Harvard
MY connection should be blazing fast, but I really get frustrated by the lack of information about what's going on. I'm wondering all the time about what place I am in someone's queue, and whether or not I'm actually in their queue. The whole server list thing send my head spinning! It's a complete mess of a program, there seem to be a great potential, but I just can't figure the damn thing out. I imported about two dozen different server.met and I just couldn't get any of the servers with high user/file counts to connect. Plus it doesn't tell me why I can't connect!!!!! WHAT THE HELL?!?!?!
All I'm asking for is a "Server full" error message, or perhaps a "Connection denied" once in a while, but no it just leaves me hanging. Oh yeah and just about every FAQ on the net doesn't tell you how to really get things working. ARGGG to hell with it, I'm going back to WinMX where I can figure sh*t out.

edonkey is only useful if you know a site that shares through edonkey. you can't just randomly log on and hope to get something. that is one of the reasons i hate it.

for any edonkey network based app its called the search button
you click on the search tab and you type in what you are looking for
you hit extend multiple times by holding down the enter key and it searches all the servers and usually finds anything you need
as for connection problems use emule
not a problem connecting so far
as for the port errors has anyone ever heard of port mapping or an easier way just change the default port in the bloody options menu

 Excellent one!
Spyware-sharing *cough*, excuse me, file-sharing programs like Kazaa and similar are really crap. Napster was good when it came out (as 2.0 beta 5, first version I tried) because it wasn't having ads or similar stupid s***.

I agree, WinMX is the best bet for high speed lines, but frankly I'm just plain through with p2p, fed up with the connection speeds and the useless tweaks I have to do to barely get 15kB/s on most DL's, especially when I've got a 1.5MB/s DSL line.

I need to say it, sorry, but I just have to.
Not 110% crap, it is 99999999999999999999999999999999999999% crap.
It can't connect to any server.

download speeds are limited to the up speed of the server. since most people's up speeds are 128k, 15k is actually quite good.

IRC downloads are usually faster but I still prefer edonkey because I can search and get the exact thing I need without going through a lot of junk.
eDonkey/eMule/Overnet are great, you just need to find out the tricks on getting them to run properly.
Pay a visit to sharereactor.com or filenexus.com, you might change your opinion.
Connection problems? eDonkeybot!
