The unfortunate part about all this, is the fact that man has no control whatsoever over the powers that be. It is true that we have little control if any over the earth.

It's not funny at all, its rather disappointing that so many human lives have been lost.

considering there is almost 7 billion people on earth, and because of global warming and so forth i think that we are lucky that it wasnt bigger, one big earthquake in the pacific ocean could cause much more damage to the U.S and Australia... Killing possible millions. Just think that the earth is lucky that this hasnt happend more in the past and lucky if it doesnt happen again which im sure it will happen again....And when it does happen to these 2 countries then whoo is gunna help... France??? Germany??? England??? Iraq??? Russia??? noone...

Wow- I didn't think it was possible to bring petty politics into a horrible tragedy such as this.
Anyway thanks Dom for the link, good find. It is amazing the devastation this unfortunate event has brought to these people. Hopefully this can, in some way, bring us all closer together...

global warming? earthquakes? am i the only one that doesnt see a correlation?
in the first pics i couldnt really tell what was going on, besides the dirtying of the water and all the turbulence. but in the pictures dom linked to you can see all of the yards and rivers flooded...it's pretty crazy.

There is no correlation. Living near a fault line caused this.
Google "Ring of Fire"
The Pacific rim has major fault lines running all around it. A major tectonic shift and you have a Tsunami.
These fault lines are responsible for volcanos, earthquakes, and tsunamis.
California one day is going to get it bad from a bad tectonic shift. Big difference is that the shift will be most probably on land (IE Big earthquake). You can bet the death toll will be high when it happens too.
Just part of living on an active planet. If it was not active we would not exist so I guess we have to take the good with the bad.
Still does not make all the deaths any less sad; just inevitatable due to the geology.
Amazing pics BTW.....great find.

A pity that those people died but what could we have done? Mass evacs? Humans are not all powerful and I think that many people now realise it again. We push death away with medicine, we push our limits but sometimes, man is just not that powerful

Nothing really could be done. There was no time. Humanity just thinks we are all powerfull. God forbid that a major natural disaster occurs. One asteroid and we all would be R.I.P. Sad thing is the chance of us (Humanity) preventing or surviving a planet killing strike is practicly nil. But on the bright side we have figured out thousands of ways to kill each other and fight like ants over a sugarcube about the dumbest things.

The fact that some are so jaded by almost 100,000 deaths in a country that is surprisingly civilized makes me feel like some of those who've died are in a better place. I moved to SE asia for familial and educational reasons (easy to become fully bilingual) and the tragedy is not only profound to me, but starkly personal. I'm saddened that this has been treated as a trivial, almost beneficial occurance to some. It says quite a bit about attitudes when one looks at the amount of aid compared to a country's GDP.
Death happens but the last thing I'd personally like to see is a analysis on how this is related to global warming.
We supported 9/11, now why can't people support the aid for the tsunamis? Is it because it's less personal?

who is "we"?
Also what does a country's GDP have to do with it? I imagine you are talking about the US right?
The country that gave over 40% of the aid given by the ENTIRE WORLD last year? Something like 40 BILLION right? What's that say about attitude?
More politicizing

The politicizing nature of this thread sickens me. 140,000 people died, in eleven countries, and it is likely to increase. This has nothing to do with politics and is not related to 9/11. This was an act of god, or nature, or whatever you want to call it, not a terrorist attack. Those that point fingers say "my country did this" "your country did this", you people need to fucking look at yourself, I think you missed the point. It is not population control, it is a tragedy, a natural tragedy, but a tragedy none the less. It is easy to sit and point fingers and talk politics, until you have to actually get into the shit and move the bodies, then the politics are out the window.

Dead on.
It was a natural disaster. What does politics got to do with it. Hopefully the world will get to together and help out instead of fighting.
Nothing could have been done to prevent it. Move on and work to help those that did not perish. The true tragedy has yet to come. If we cannot work to provide aid to the people affected by this disaster then many more will needlessly die due to hunger and disease.
That will be the true human disaster that could be prevented.

What was really amazing about pre-tsunami was that all the animals ran to high ground, and that only a few animals actually died from the tsunami
