Possibility of an Earth Impact in 2029 Ruled Out for Asteroid 2004 MN4
Over the past week, several independent efforts were made to search for pre-discovery observations of 2004 MN4. These efforts proved successful today when Jeff Larsen and Anne Descour of the Spacewatch Observatory near Tucson, Arizona, were able to detect and measure very faint images of asteroid 2004 MN4 on archival images dating to 15 March 2004. These observations extended the observed time interval for this asteroid by three months allowing an improvement in its orbit so that an Earth impact on 13 April 2029 can now be ruled out. . I can recall in the past, several near misses of planetary bodies and smaller chunks of asteroid, what a perfect oppurtunity to develope a huge weapon to counter this threat

Haha, this always happens. Scientists will see a asteroid, think its going to hit, but they never do.

actually our odds are terrable
You know how many people are in charge of
watching for asteriods, tracking / keeping track of them in our galixy?
Give up? a whopping total of 4 people.
know how many there are out there? alot
know how many that are large enough that would be consider the size the therotically killed the dinosorse? big enough to wipe out life on earth way to many.... know how many of these are "missed" not being tracked constaly?
way to many
again... our odds are terrable

well, if it does happen to change it's course like Neon said, maybe we can pull off some kind of hero type action like in Armaggeddon ?
But my sister says maybe we'll just kill ourselves in a funny manner

We have no such plans in place. Even our nukes are useless against space targets. No "space" guidence system....
Our shuttles suck...

The scray thing is we have no unnatral defence against asortiods. Out atmosphere is te best we've got and we weeken that with our pollutiants every day....
Dis you guys never here of the geoligial find of a massive asteriod ipact? in europe that they belive was what off-ed the dinosours... and impact of that size would o blankend the skys for years. well of buring gasses and ash killing everything even remotely near buy....
It it isnt an asteriod it's our own planet we must worry about..... Earth is still s "cooling mass" earth quakes, volanos, tsunamis, etc
don't foget thers and ice age process that happens repitively every so many like 20,000 thousands years or so...
tons of danger..... Our only real hope of humanitys survival is to push out to the stars....not as in a cheesy space program I mean collinization of other planets in our galixy and moveing on to space ships/fleets capable of "intergalitic" travel much like start track just less "cheesy"... it's the only way of giveing humanity a fair chance of survival... when the push come to shove...
Think of it though all our eggs are in one basket! some virus, natual disaster, or we could even doom our selfs with our wars and WMD, our pullute our selfs to our doom, or as we do currently use up all our resouces, run of of population space etc....
people will die .... but the race must survive! that needs to be our number one goal again insted of $$ cash $$

According to one theory Most researchers agree that the Moon formed five billion years ago from debris blasted off Earth in a giant impact.

Very well deducted Cdsdontburn
You guys have watched too much of the Day After Tomorrow!
Yes we as a race are very very weak and if a asteroid won't crash into us, well mother nature can kill us differently. Look at what SE asia is looking at... 70 thousand people dead from a tsunami. Think of a twister passing through the MIDDLE of ohio... Think of the ice caps melting and belgium, bangladesh and all just sinking under water! You know what, we'll die when we have to...
First we have to survive a nuclear war.
Second, we gotta survive nature's evil stuff (earthquake, etc...)
Third, we gotta survive extra terrestial debris (comets and asteroids)
And fourthely, we gotta avoid the Sun's death.
I conclude we shall all die from the 1st possibilty

well, i don't know about a nuclear war. still a possibility, but the Cold War has been over for over a decade already. In our lifetime, we will more than likely die from either natural death, or some kind of freak car accident or shoot out. If not by either of those, then by mother nature herself.

Don't forget the other possable dangors.... "invasion" be a forgien life form.. As science goes it's likely we are not alone in the universe and one thing is a constant. survival of the fitist... It only makes since thata there are civilzations out there more or less advaced then us.
the list is endless.....heck a single virus "could" wipe out 99.99999999%
of the human race excpt for some remote "villages" in in middle of BFE lol
Well even if we don't blow ou selfs up were screwing up the fragile eco system. Once it's totally fubar thers no fixing it... of course it will over time after were nothimg more then fossils....
hard to predict our doom to many possabilities
global warming melt the ice caps and dround us... another ice age could wipe alof of us out....
heck the sun could expode, burn out... that would kill us pretty fast nothing like it being absoulte zero!
the earth and othr planets slowy escape the suns pull meaning we move verry slowy futher and further away from the sun over time.....
It take so verry little to scew us. Heck the tsumni you spoke of actually affected the rotation of the earth! least thats what they said on TV.
can't worry bout it to much though what ill be... will be

The Human race is doomed through stupidity, we'll never survive another hundred years before we kill ourselves off, or barring that we'll certainly be a darker and less advanced lot than we are now, probably living under some horrible dictatorship 1984 style with a never ending war on terror and made up bad guys to keep us in check, oh wait a minute....
