Teen Sent To Jail For Ringing Cell Phone
17-yr old Mariela Acevedo has been sentenced to 21 days in jail because her cell phone went off in the middle of a court in Central Islip, NY.
Acevedo was waiting for a hearing on drug charges. District Court Judge Salvatore Alamia told everyone in her court, "If you don't know how to shut (your cell phone) off, go outside and introduce it to the heel of your shoe."
Moments later, someone called Acevedo. The Judge called her up to the bench and Acevedo said she thought she turned it off. "Yes, you did. Right. I know you've been playing with it all morning, sayonara," said the Judge, and off went Acevedo to jail.

I don't feel bad for her. I also doubt it was her first offense (I know a judge and a few legal types, and I don't know any of them that would do that to a first timer). Anyway, if she is so dumb and disrespectful, she will have plenty of time to change her ways in jail.

The 21 days in jail was harsh, maybe he's making an example of her?
I'm sick of all these kids in my school having thier cells go off. 2 questions, is it hard to turn it off or atleast set it to vibrate? (But they don't have half the mind to do that most likely ) and 2, why is someone calling during school?
I'm not totally opposed to what he did, but it was a bit harsh. Set a precedent atleast to f*cking turn your obnoxious phone off in court.

It doesn't matter. the girl plead guilty to possession of a controlled substance and got 45 days in jail. The judge let her serve the 21 days concurrently with the 45 day sentence. basically, she serves no extra time for the cell phone thing, just a ding on her record. (which I doubt is a big worry of hers.)
