DriverHeaven.net IRC Guide.
1. Quick Start
==============
Want a quick start without all the hassle of understanding what the hell IRC is? goto
http://www.driverheaven.net and click the Java Chat button on the right-hand side. If your prompted to install something then click 'yes' that's the small java program that acts as your IRC client. When your prompted to enter your username this can be anything you want. Remember impersonating a member of the DH Staff will not be tolerated.
2. The 'myth' of NickServ
=========================
REGISTERING WITH NICKSERV IS NOT REQUIRED! - FACT
NickServ enables the server to recognise your status and set the correct mode, this really only applies to Operators of the channel i.e. Mod's on this forum and those who serve files who are given +v. NickServ also means no one without the password can use that nickname. So you may want to register it anyway, see number .4
3. Using mIRC
=============
mIRC is the program used for accessing IRC servers, the original program is available from
http://www.mirc.com, However most users will prefer IRC Scripts, theses a mIRC that has been modified changing colours, added features etc. One of the most popular is the Invision Script, There home page is here:
http://invision.lebyte.com/ you can download the latest version by looking for links in there forum or asking me to send it you via DCC in the channel.
If you have mIRC already you can use this link to join the channel:
Click Here
4. Registering with NickServ
============================
If you want your Nickname registering with Nickserv here's how:
Nickserve is a service that keeps a record of your nickname and a password/email you assign to it, therefore preventing someone taking your name and posing as you. However if they register it first then there's not much you can do. If you select a nickname that's already been registered you will be notified like so:
[11:07am] *NickServ* This nickname is registered and protected. If it is your
[11:07am] *NickServ* nick, type /msg NickServ IDENTIFY password. Otherwise,
[11:07am] *NickServ* please choose a different nick.
so if that's ur nickname then type /msg NickServ IDENTIFY password
where password is the one you set, easy huh?
It is best to add that line with your password into the perform on connect box in File|Options|IRC, that's assuming your terminal is secure, or if you type /ident
most IRC scripts will promt you with a box to enter you password.
REGISTERING IN THE FIRST PLACE
#######################
Select you nickname,
then type
/MSG NICKSERV REGISTER password email
password is the one you choose, and your email will be used to send your pass if you forget it, and for extra confirmation that you indeed registered the nickname.
it will tell you that you've successfully registered the nick:
[10:32pm] *NickServ* Nickname craig5320 registered under your account: craig5320@*.manc.broadband.ntl.com
If you are still having problems try this command /NICKSERV HELP REGISTER
that will give you info on the REGISTER command.
If you have the identify command in ur perform on connect and Chanserv has a mode to set you at e.g. +V but it doesn't then it's likely ur joining the channel before you've been identified in which case type /hop this will leave the channel then re-join and Chanserv should then set mode +V
5. FAQ's
========
Well seen as no-one has ever asked me any questions nevermind asking frequently I guess for the time being this will be blank.
If you have problems joining reply here explainin the problem and whether your using mIRC, if you can connect then ask your question in the channel. Or if no-ones talking, ask in here. I will leave it open for the time being but if the thread becomes too beefy I will close it.
Hope to see you soon,
