I've used ebay for buying and selling about 40 items and never once had a problem of any kind.

The trick is to only deal with people with very good positive feedback, take your time, don't get stressed out trying to bag a "bargain" and always check through the sellers profile and read the item description and payment terms very carefully.

People seem to go to ebay and get hung up on bidding, often paying well over the odds for used kit. I seem to recall someone auctioning places in a reserve queue for ATI (or was it Nvidia)'s latest video card.

I'm a uker Jeff... you know that - anyways - I don't wanna spend alot on a new laptop - i want to keep it on the cheap - gonna grab the best deal I can for £300... I would have stretched to £550 for one of those gorgeous sonys - but won't go further... unless I get some form of finance - then I would buy retail

I bought my first video card on ebay (a geforce2 GTS), I bought the Logitech Keyboard I'm typing on now on Ebay 2 years ago- they stopped selling them retail and I liked this model (corded I-touch) -Plus it was a great deal.
I bought my copy of Soldier of Fortune II when it was still quite expensive in stores and online retail shops- I got it for 10 bucks and played online with it for years. I just bought an original copy of Grand Prix Legends last week for 10 bucks. -Not the new packaging all the retailers are selling, but the old style packaging with the original racing guide and racing companion books. Cool stuff for cheap. I bought other things too- can't remember what, but I've never had any problems. You just have to use common sense and if it's too good to be true is probably is..

I lost a bid on 256mb stick of BH-5 ram a couple weeks ago too- those bid snipers really suck sometimes.

EDIT-

Oh yeah- I forgot- I also bought my AXDA1800DLT3C~JIUHB0321VPMW (1800xp Tbred B 1.5v default) that does 2.2ghz @1.55v on ebay- I couldn't find the chip anywhere but there.

ubid is a place where dealers post things, and sometime users that are typically electronic oriented.

I actually ordered my old 1800+ processor from Ubid back when they were first released for under $125. Was a great price on a retail box chip.

Ubid is nice, but you need to make sure you can afford it as things typically go for a higher price due to the sites guarantee on thigns ordered from THEIR AUTHORIZED DEALERS.

because I want something that is small and lightweight but with a reasonable size hard drive (anything over 20GB is acceptable)

The best thing I can find for around £1000 or less is this tablet - it's a v. good price for a tablet - plus I think that the touch-screen will be a pretty cool feature. I also want good battery life - so that's where the centrino comes in. As for disk drives - I want a cdrw but not a dvdrw - and I want a dvdrom - so this laptop has got everything that I want and more. And then I want integrated wifi too.

10.4" touch screen
40GB HDD
1GHz Centrino
CDRW/DVD ROM
512MB RAM
Integrated Wifi
Bluetooth
1.5kg!!!

will only be using it for work/music/films - no games - for £1069 - you won't be able to get anything better than a 1ghz centrino (centrino wise that is - you could go the way of p4 or athlon and get higher clocks - bu I want centrino)

Have you tried tis place http://www.sterlingxs.co.uk
They usually have a reasonable selection, new and used

Nothing that fits your Centrino/DVD/CD-RW requirement at the moment though
