I don't just jump into things I learn about it first. Unlike the people that ate full bags of the new potato chips cooked in the “olestra” and learned its nasty side affects the hard way.

LOL though many trips to the rest room LOL

I'm still reading....

Ahhhh! Phenylalanine! it could be yery very bad! to some people

read this

Quote:
PhenylalaniNE

A precursor for neurotransmitter biosynthesis
One of 20 essential amino acids that the body cannot synthesize
L-phenylalanine is an essential amino acid (cannot be produced by the body) and thus must be obtained through the diet. Phenylalanine is used in different biochemical processes to produce neurotransmitters, dopamine, norepinephrine, and epinephrine. It is claimed but not proven that phenylalanine can promote sexual arousal, and there is evidence that phenylalanine can increase mental alertness (Grevet et al. 2002) and release hormones affecting appetite. D-phenylalanine has been shown to inhibit the metabolism of opiate-like substances called enkephalins in the brain. It is claimed that DL-phenylalanine is effective in the treatment of chronic pain (Walsh et al. 1986; Russell et al. 2000). There is some evidence that phenylalanine can help to overcome alcoholism and other drug addictions.

There have been reports that L-phenylalanine can promote high blood pressure in those predisposed to hypertension. Therefore, it is important to start off using moderate doses of phenylalanine, about 500 mg a day, and slowly work up to 1500 mg a day. Monitoring in the first few months on phenylalanine can detect blood pressure increases in the minority of people who will have this symptom. In fact, a Chinese study demonstrated the possible implication of phen-ylalanine in hypertension. The study looked at rat offspring whose parents and grandparents had essential hypertension (without known cause or preexisting renal disease) and stroke and compared them to those without a genetic predisposition to essential hypertension. By comparing the radioactive counts of phenylalanine and concentration in blood and tissue after administration of a phenylalanine substance, the researchers found that "A unique aberrant of metabolic kinetics of phenylalanine might be implicated in the inherited pathogenesis of essential hypertension and stroke . . . ." (Zhao et al. 2001).

Phenylalanine can promote the cell division of existing malignant melanoma cells. If you have melanoma, or any other form of cancer for that matter, avoid phenylalanine. According to a study in the Journal of Human Nutrition and Dietetics, three patients with metastatic melanoma and three with metastatic breast cancer took part in a study that involved a diet of phenylalanine and tyrosine administered at a very low dose (10 mg/kg/day for 1 month). The results were not good. Researchers reported that all the patients experienced anxiety and depression and other side effects. They also lost weight. The authors of this pilot study concluded: "Low phenylalanine and tyrosine diets do not appear to be a viable treatment option for patients with advanced cancer" (Harvie et al. 2002).

Persons who have PKU (phenylketonuria) cannot use phenylalanine. This includes those born with a genetic deficiency that prevents them from metabolizing phenylalanine (Walter et al. 2002).

Just got 'em at the Winn-Dixie store...

The Phenylketonurics are in some mints I have (from Germany) as well...

Sounds like something they'd make billiard balls out of.

PKU (phenylketonuria), in its "classic" form, is a rare, inherited metabolic disease that results in mental retardation and other neurological problems when treatment is not started within the first few weeks of life. When a very strict diet is begun early and well-maintained, effected children can expect normal development and a normal life span. (Not all elevations of blood phenylalanine require treatment; any child with a level less than 6 mg/dl does not need to be on a special diet and is not risk for mental retardation.)

The Enzyme Deficiency
The disease arises from the absence of a single enzyme (phenylalanine hydroxylase). This enzyme normally converts the essential amino acid, phenylalanine, to another amino acid, tyrosine. Failure of the conversion to take place results in a buildup of phenylalanine. Through a mechanism that is not well understood, the excess phenylalanine is toxic to the central nervous system and causes the severe problems normally associated with PKU. Not every child has the same degree of enzyme deficiency, however; some have enough enzyme activity that the diet can be quite liberal, while others must have the very strict diet. The nature of the diet for an individual child must be determined by an experienced PKU treatment program.

wow, that's a lot of things to be caused by one ingredient. you'd think if it were so dangerous, it would be well known, and hmmm not sold? if any of that stuff happens to people, I'd bet it's to .00002% of them. Or, that's the stuff that happens to people with the PKU disease

You got it Neon Cowboy...

I was reading the ingredients while I was working at the grocery store last evening - it's aspartame. Remember the warnings when it first came out that there was a problem with that additive when exposed to heat?

It's in sooo many things now...

I can't really dig this new coke myself, just seems kinda bleh.

I hate this new fad "low carb" crap everywhere you go. Reminds me of an 80's hair fad or something...

Yesterday I was thinking about the fact that it irritates me, just as I finish that thought I drive by a billboard with "LOW CARB" something or other in 10239423 font...grrr.

It sucks. They say it has 1/2 the sugar of normal Coke -- tastes more like it's got 1/10 of the sugar, really.

I respect the low-carb diet. But honestly, if you're on it, you don't really need to be drinking Coke anyway.

wdgf

The low carb diet is only the first step of the true Atkin's diet, and staying at the no-carb to low-carb stage will make you very unhealthy, according to the book written by mr. Atkins. Carb-deficiency is bad.

Anyway, if it's still got calories, you're still gonna get fat. Diet, 0 calorie soda is the only semi-healthy alternative...of course, if you were really worried about health you could drink WATER.

Bleh, this low-carb/no-carb craze is so retarded.

Well the main reason I didn't drink coke before was due to the fact that it WAS too sweet for me. This C2 stuff isn't really all that bad, now. Still...it is Coke. RC for life!

Actually I took a special class, forestry, landscaping and green house management. I learned when it comes to chemicals and drugs for that matter a lot of stuff that doesn’t make it on the label! They don’t want you to b well informed because then you won’t buy or use their product!
