I've Just About Had It
There are moments, I think, in every PC enthusiast's life, where he becomes so disturbed --so agitated-- that he questions whether or not this is all worth it. There are moments when I think "Why do I even bother with computers?" and seriously consider dropping the hobby. There are times when even the greatest technician feels helpless and clueless. Sometimes you really just want to quit.
This is one such moment.
I had the most beautiful WinXP install ever. It was responsive, never crashed, and was faster than hell. I had one problem. Whenever I'd click on the icon to connect to my ISP, the PC would freeze. I mean, you could move the mouse, but that was it. It would wait and wait and wait. Eventually the prompt to enter your username and password would come up and everything would be fine. But you'd have to wait a good minute or two for the PC to come out of that frozen state.
So I did a WinXP Repair install. It didn't work. So I did a "Delete current Windows installation" install. That worked, until I started installing things. Then Windows would give me a "delayed write fail" error, reboot, and promptly give me a "UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME" error. ARG!
Okay, so I opt for a clean reinstall. I format the disk, install Windows. All systems go. I install Catalyst drivers. Still good. I do a few tweaks. Fine. Run AtomicXP. Great. Everything works fine, I have no problem with stability. Only, now when I try to start up the System module in Control Panel, the PC FREEZES for a minute or two before it does it.
I am so weary. I like XP, but I keep having to put up with these little quirks and I am seriously tired of it. Like when I first installed XP, it had difficulty shutting down properly. Since then I've made .reg file tweaks to fix that problem, but I don't know how to fix the two above problems. I am so tired.
Anyone encounter similar problems? Please don't say something like "Just install Win98!" cause that's not really helpful. I want to fix these XP problems...

Well, since you said not to say "Just install Win98"...
...I think I'll just keep my big mouth shut for now. I've been where you're at, not with the same problem...but the same system-hell mentality. You have my sympathies and I wish you the best of luck in fixing your problem. In the meantime, how's about the term "dual-boot"....

Heh heh, inasmuch as you're the only cat I know still running Win98, that comment was basically directed towards you. ^_^ I sincerely appreciate the best wishes, though.

It almost sounds like your problem could be hardware related. Maybe a piece of hardware is damaged and you just may need to take out that piece of hardware?

sounds like an irq problem... you don't happen to have a dvd decoder card do you?
oh, and i also use win98. i've had nightmares about winxp, and during the 7 day period where i tried to get a good working install of winxp, after about 100 attempted installs, i decided i would never go that path again.

I've Just About Had It
may i
re "Anyone encounter similar problems?"
it's yes and no answer really. will skip all details since i'm not even know/remember how i fix it.
but my prob is stopped here no further down.
more info needed.. enumerate all hard/softwares installed on the computer,
including any drivers which's not included on XP's CD.. upto this point,
if you willing to do it.. pls do so.
or..
all i can see... at this point only one prob re control panal Right ?
very hard to tell what's caused.. but i like to begin with software 1st..
beginning from here on it'll be like "if i were you" thing.
go backward all the way one by one.. get a full reboot at each and every uninstalled..
then check at the prob spot for how's go.
or..
i may have to get to this point. clean install once again.
only this time try to change a little to the way of installation and my bad habit.
for exampl, b4 install.. shutdown the computer completely,
..when lasttime i just hit reboot with the XP's CD on its tray.
or this time i wili not use the quick-format. whatever..
you'r a pro man.
as soon as i can get into the control panel.. i'll check the prob spot 1st,
then begin to install driver/software whatever needed.
one at a time.. and keep on checking till i can indicate..
or pin point it (the prob)... and if it's still need to be on the machine..
another word the machine wont run without it..
if it's a hardware.. i'll find the fix a little bit easy now.
if it's software, simply dont use it.
if it's a software that make for a hardware again i'll find the fix a little bit easy now.
if still not good.. you will see my post here again!
i know you'll get it somehow. good luck.

I have had the same problem ever since i installed XP. I originally thought it was something to do with MSN messenger but I don't think it is that because I stopped that starting up at boot up and the problem is still there. I have just learned to live with it because i would hate to go back to 98/ME now, I love XP! ....inspite of this annoying problem. If you manage to find out the cause I would be greatful if you could post it on here and I will do the same.

Can you ctrl/alt/del to bring up the window that will show you what program isn't responding or is that another thing Billy Boy Gates has taken out?
hidserv.exe > HID = Human Interface Device. Controls USB, PCI, IEEE 1394 Firewire, etc. If it stops responding, you'll have the problems you describe: so I hear.
Good luck (you'll need it),
JAV
GBA!
What is this 'blue screen of death' that XP installs? I understand it works real good, but since I'm still on ole 98SE I don't know what it is. Is it something they beta tested in W2K & now have it optimized for XP?

Fornicatarachnid,
(hope you still be cool after read my intro)
Not everyone who got XP has that prob..
and you dont have to go back to 9xMe really..
dont live with it, post your prob. peeps here will help you.
i can only see JavaFox's prob. re the Control Panel..
and his last format/install the XP did not give him any more prob. re "click on the icon to connect to my ISP, the PC would freeze" so the prob. is gone i guess.
so it's like your PC would freeze immediately right after you clicks on the connection icon Right?
HTH, build a new connection from either "create a new connection" or from IE6's internet options/connections/setup or add. depend., move the dot to Never dial a connection..
and this time do not create a shortcut when asked.
see if any softwares that use internet like auto-update or somes then adjust it for this test.
turn off all firewall software including XP ICF to that connection.
delete all internet's traces/ get a full reboot.
try to connect it again. if its okay this time, you can restore whatever you like.
here's some more, i want to make sure you got to do this only once,
if you use a dialup... do this 1st b4 others steps above..
delete all connecttions you've made..
then refreshing the modem's driver.. by unistall/install from device manager,
then do the others

I'll try to be a bit more accurate about when this problem occurs. It always occurs when I first boot up the PC. Its as though something is going on in the background, all other programs will work normally but if I try to connect to the internet, using AOL, the window will open then nothing for at least a minute. If I click anywhere in the AOL window it says "AOL not responding". I have tried uninstalling, reinstalling AOL and my modem drivers but the problem still persists. Once the freeze has cleared it will be fine for the rest of the day, connnecting immediately as soon as I click the icon.... until the next reboot. I don't want to do a clean reinstall because everything else is working ok, and as I said before I can live with it if I have to. Any advice would be appreciated.
