Default Post Why Did My Computer Just Crash?

Yep, a poll. What do you think, enlightened readers, caused my OS to just die?

I'm runnin' XP.

Have you made any changes or tweaks? Also did you mess with the registry or install a program? And what exactly do you mean it just "died"? There's got to be a reason.

I did a Repair install and everything was running fine. I installed some updated drivers and applications (the suspicious ones are listed above), and the thing died. UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME and all that.

The only tweaking programs you need (or ever will need) are TweakXP, TweakUI, AtomicXP, Xteq XSetup, Cacheman and REGEDIT. Trash that OptimizeXP crap

Nah. I don't care, I've already formatted the drive (which was stupid, totally forgot to backup my Mp3s -- DOH!) but I'm still curious.

The only thing like that which happened to me was when I used Bootvis to try and speed up the boot-up process. I ran the program and when It said "Windows is shutting down" I got all these errors about Low on resources and when I booted back up XP it wouldnt let me past the "Signing in page" I had to reinstall. And man did that suck!

Ok speaking or crashing my system just powerdowned well, or will actully just shut off it was like it didnt get any juice and then i heard the hdd spin back up like it was getting power again and then boom it went silent. I hit the power on the system and it would turn the back off. Then i triped the switch on the back of the psu and turned it back on and noe everything is fine. I know its not heat related because my cpu runs 104F and my system runs at 88F. Any ideas why that would happen? it kindafreaked me out

I'm leaning towards blaming the VIA drivers. I actually had to reinstall Windows a few times. The second time or so, I did not install OptimizeXP, I just installed the Catalysts and the VIAs. Then Windows would give me this weird error about "write delay failed" and then would fail to reboot. I've formatted and reinstalled, this time installing only ATi's drivers, and my system seems to be working fine. This is the first really bad experience I've had with VIA drivers; anyone else have trouble with the 4.40s?

Javafox, here's something you should remember: never install any IDE drivers because the ones that come with windows are fine. The only VIA drivers you need to be installing are the AGP drivers. In my experience, windows default IDE drivers are always better than what the chipset companies make. Don't ask me why . I can't guarantee anything, but any IDE drivers other than windows default have always given me problems.

You kno I read the thread title and thought this would be a chance to show off my mind reading skills. guess not. I'd have to say it was the via drivers. but we'll never kno for sure I had Partition Manager crash while making a new partition on my system disk. left me with a PROCESS1_FAILED_TO_INITIALISE ending up formatted, lost all my files too! :'( it's a real downer

That is what the experience of myself and my friends has shown. Use the XP default IDE drivers--those seem to work the best.
