Default Post Monitor experts step in please....

Now if this isn't a unique problem then I don't know what is.

Ok I got this referb monitor from my dad because it has been having color problems (mainly red dimming and coming back so the screen is flashing and red colors are real dark or non existant...) What seemed to workin the past was a slight tap on the side and it would work for awhile more no problem. But as time progressed(over a year at least) it has got to a point where the red is 99% of the time not working and every now and then you would have correct color for like .5 of a sec. So he got his new LCD screen and GAVE it to me(to do whatever with it.) So today i finaly decided to mess around with it....now this is where it gets confusing as hell(for me at least)

I decided to slap it on the side and i saw it flash the red back and forth really fast then go back dim so I hit it consideribly hard on the side.(did nothing) Then on the top which made the screen go super purple that stuck...so I hit it one more time the top just to see what happens and the screen goes off. pushed the power button screen came back and it was still all purplish. So shook it and walaa perfect color and completely stable so far.

WTF What the hell could be causing this? is it a bad solder joint or cap or something?

Its a phillips brilliance 109. And it does the same on 4 different computers with different os's and video cards.

*note I do not care if I ended up braking this monitor so save it. needed to vent a little anyways. now if I had a pistol..........

I would love to help you , but you are very unclear in your story. I can't tell which monitor you are talking about in that second paragraph. Please specify and be more clear

Well aleast you didn't post something about a musical instrument > viola. I can understand walaa or even ta da, but viola? where the heck did that phrase come from anyway?

If you plan on opening it up: ***Be extremely careful!!! There are capacitors in there that hold enough electricity to kill you!!!*** Even after you unplug the monitor!

Sounds like it's time for a professional to look it over.

If I remember right there is a number of magnets around the electron gun in the tube. Maybe they have become loose so it is out alignment. It's been awhile since I've worked on a monitor so I could be wrong. I don't think it's something board level though because the fault would stay pretty constant. How does it differ when the monitor is at different temps? I know sometimes boards in these over time with heat can stretch the solder so cold solder joints develope. However, that usually means a total lose in picture. Just remember if you crack that sucker open, be VERY CAREFUL!!! 20K volts does not feel very good! If your not sure what your doing it may not even be worth getting it fixed. I bet your looking at $100 to do that professionally.

I found out what it was. The connector from the PCB to the electron gun was slightly loose and now this monitor is working great. Not bad for a 1997 made monitor.
