It's not a paradox...here...let me explain...
The mine can be here, there are three by the three...two by both twos...one by the one.
It could also be here.
It's not a paradox, it's merely a sucky mine placement...you have a 50 50 chance of losing, but it is well within the rules of the game.
(the number signifies how many mines are within the 8 squares around the number. There are three mines around the three, see?)

Quite so Reno. I just thought it amusing - clearing a minefield, and you end up with a 50/50 chance of losing.
Anyway, Judas, the way the game works is you have a square grid. You click somewhere, and it will show either a blank space or a number or a bomb. If it's a number, then the number (1 or 2 or 3) means that there are <number> bombs in the neighboring squares (including diagonals). If its a blank space, then there are no bombs in the neighboring squares (a 0). A bomb means you lose. Through looking at the numbers that determine how many bombs there are neighboring, you can determine where bombs are placed and "defuse" them by right clicking and putting a red flag on their grid squares. My avatar has a situation where the number placement leaves an uncertain pattern that leaves you with two places where the bomb could be, and leaves you with a 50/50 chance of hitting the bomb.

I remember TWO cheats, though not very well, one resulted an a pixel changing to indicate a mine, and the other stopped the counter, bringing an end to challenging for best times (that was in Win 3.1, not sure if the same abuse works in Win9x, even less so in XP - don't think it does, not even in 9x)
