School project

I have to come up with a workable network with the following resources, any suggestions?
1 Windows NT 4.0 Server
100 workstations – 50 Windows 95 clients and 50 Windows 98 Clients
10baseT Ethernet
Bus topology
4 Repeaters
1 Router – attached to the Internet

Currently the network has three Network Administrators. There is a plan in place to hire an additional person in the next 30 days to provide for vacation and relief coverage. Megabucks is a computer support firm, performing online and onsite computer support, working a 24/7 operation in three shifts. The server is a single processor Pentium II, with 256 MB of RAM.

There have been recent concerns about the performance of the network. During peak hours, information updates from the server are extremely slow. Megabucks is planning on taking on one thousand new customers in the next year, bringing the total client base to five thousand.

Another major concern is that there are not enough people on the support system to handle existing customer inquiries. For this reason, and because of the company’s growth plans, twenty to thirty new positions are to be created and filled in the next year.

Required:

1. Network configuration to meet the goals of the company.
2. Any software or hardware changes needed.
3. Information about the topology that will be used in the new system.
4. Drawing of an example of the new system, including 10 nodes, the server and router.
5. Information about wiring changes, if any, that will be required.
6. When giving a network modification or major system change, justify why it is being done.
7. Items that must be purchased or constructed, i.e., router or network cabling.
8. Detailed cost of items being purchased.

hey disastropy

1. definitely need to run a star bus, abandon the bus topology, we can mesh the star topo easily enough.
2. definitely need to think about XP professional for the server, and workstations.
3. bump up the media too, rj45 all around.
4. the server is a no brainer as well, multi processor with 4 gig is good, but damn expensive
5. I say bag the repeaters and get hubs
6. one router might need an upgrade, lets get into the 21st century.
7. dedicated servers for mail/storage/and wireless technology.

I say down with the mesh, Its very error proned and so tangled youll search forever to troubleshoot problems. Definitely go Enet prolly t1 just for the good connection for the online support. Need good bandwidth for sure. Definitely dedicated servers. For the main server multi processor 2-4 gig ram for sure. Wireless can be ran off your main server. Mail keep a seperate dedicated being support lots of incoming and outgoing. Big inboxes for sure. I guess star for sure prolly, but avoidance in meshing try to keep it clean. can we bump that to 100baseT???

reter

I would just replace the server with a 233MMx Pentium with 64 megs of ram, A P2 is probably way too fast.

are you sure... i think the 486 with 32 megs of ram would run much smoother... or maybe dual 386 if we have the extra cash we could run on a limb with 64 megs of ram....

Yeah, you must be new. I never make a subject to my posts, unless I find it highly important that I do. Usually, it's just a random string of letters.
