ROTK....Should be Renamed......
"Hobbits Crying Constantly"
I finally saw the movie last night. I actually did like it a LOT. But, I can understand why someone suggested it be renamed to the above.

Best trilogy ever made, powerful, moving, amazing scenery and the sheer power of talent behind the scenes in art design takes my breath away. This trilogy is only really truly appreciated with the incredible special edition 4 DVD versions.

Zardon, I wholeheartedly agree!
The way Peter Jackson made the movie by doing all three at the same time...and then releasing each 'chapter' a year after one another was a stroke of genius, I believe.
I can't wait to see what he does with King Kong!!

Got to agree there. But I also agree with Judas. My girlfriend was going mad near the end as she though it was going to be finished in like 2 minutes and then it started to end all over again. Fair enough that you want to know what happens to everyone but was it really necessary? Jackson did cut out a pretty important part of the book and then puts all that it. It just doesn't make sense.
And as for the tears? You don't expect to see the guys who are defeating evil crying every five mins.
Still, top film though. And better than the final Matrix movie.

Ive been around a bit, ive watched thousands and thousands of films and I almost always find a flaw when watching a film. I honestly think Peter Jackson is a genius. Certainly I hear of the criticisms pointed to him for changing certain aspects of the book but it is virtually impossible to recreate a book onto moving video. He has done a tremendous amounf of soul searching to recreate aspects into this film. If you have even a bit of a childs imagination inside you, they are mind blowing pieces of work, and im not talking merely about the CGI, if you watch the acting, the set design, the way the photography and camera is handled, there is alot of love surrounding these films. It brings out the child in us all !
After watching alot of the 4 DVD sets of the first two movies, I just sat with my mouth open at the amount of work, the insight and the technical ability of the team surrounding the man with the vision. It was also fascinating to hear the alternative sound tracks and just how much all the actors bonded making the films. They really were "the fellowship" and I feel you can see the interaction and the friendship from real life carried over into the films.
Also the music? have you actually listened to the epic passages in the first film? the beautiful flowing orchestral scores and the dark passages which build the tension when its needed. and Christopher lee with Ian mckellan.......... thats going to be along with the classics in years to come when people look back at this.
I dont think alot of people right now realise, but this series will be hailed as some of the best movie making of all time - true art isnt fully appreciated until many years have passed.

Well after that shambles of a 3rd movie - I actually hope they don't bother to make another. I got the feeling that the 3rd one was just the second movie stretched out too far. It bored me.

Well I haven't seen the last part yet, but I remember when I saw the first part, I was amazed by the great casting of actor's , the amazing landscapes, and the wonderfull music, and having read the books several times, and was thinking; this is just how I pictured it all when the book exactly the right actors for the right role (one exception for Galadriel, that should have been Uma Thurman) IMHO
dissapointed about some important scene that I think should have been there
but overal I must say no one could have done it better than P.Jackson,
and I will buy the complete DVD's set when it come in the store

Very good trilogy. Ranks up there with the original Star Wars trilogy and Transformers: The Movie.

Speaking making the whole movie all at once... The guy who played Gandalf (Sorry I don't know the name off hand and I'm too lazy to look it up) was on Conan O'Brien one night. He mentioned how the last scene was actually one of the first scenes filmed. He's a great actor and so is Elijah Wood and everybody in the last scene. He went to explain how he found it difficult to relate and make the last scene seem sad when he's working with strangers for the very first time.

I have to disagree that this is the best trilogy ever made.
Fellowship of the Ring: Best movie of the trilogy, the extended edition is excellent. The acting is at its best (Elijah isn't into full blown "I'm an annoying sissy" mode yet), the pacing is excellent...except for Hobbiton, much too slow (although, I realize the most important part of the trilogy). Moiria is the high point of the film, along with the prelude, best acting - anything dealing with the elves. Best sets of the movie, Rivendell - Lothlorien. Best sets of the trilogy (except the Witch King's palace is pretty awesome too). Best direction...except for Arwen's riding sequence, feels very off when you listen to the music and watch the action, although that could be an editing problem.
The Two Towers: Worst movie of the trilogy, the extended edition is very good. The acting is sub-par...Wormtounge is the best actor of the movie, besides Samwise. I'm serious. I hate Frodo in this movie. I hate Smeagol. I hate hate HATE Arwen in this movie. I like Aragorn. I like Gimli. I HATE Legolas. The pacing, very awkward...everything between the Fellowship's hunt for Meridoc and Perrigren and their meeting with Gandalf the White (which, there is NO explanation for why Gandalf sounds like Saruman...yes, he is what Saruman was supposed to be...but it wasn't intended for that to be the case, irksome in the least) seems rushed, like this whole movie. The battle of helms deep is WAY too CGI heavy. Yes, they did an excellent job of making it look *realistic* but it is just not as intense as it should be when they show the masses of orcs/goblins/uruk-hai. It just looks like a giant crown of dark people, and the final scene of the battle...not even NEARLY as impressive as ANYTHING in braveheart. The problem? Scale. Thousands of guys = cool. Thousands of guys with no differention between them = realism defeating. The elves, again, were cool though. And the dward tossing...hehe. The set pieces of these movies, forgettable. Helms Deep is just another stronghold, although Rivendell is cool again hehe. Filler movie. Necessary plot progression movie. It fell into the same trap that Matrix Reloaded did, which is too bad.
Return of the King: Middle movie of the trilogy, no CLUE about the extended edition. The acting is pretty good, but is spotty. The multitude of close-up "I'm dying, time for a speech" scenes is WAY overdone. I absolutely cannot STAND Frodo in this movie, especially at the over-extended ending. Ian McKellan is excellent and exciting in his "battle-mode" in the siege of Minas Tirith, but his stellar performance is counteracted by the over-acted parts for Eowyn. She was good in Two Towers...but...when she's fighting Gothmog (Witch King)...ugh...should have been so cool, but she ruins it with her...I dunno, I just don't like that scene. I loved the Dead King and his warriors, that was just awesome! The pacing was pretty good, there is a lot to fit in I guess. But whatever happened to Gimli and Legolas...what, two minutes of screen time? Aragorn was great in this, Arwen...again...sucked. She was at least hotter in this movie. The set for the Witch King's place...so cool...even though it wasn't a set. Minas Tirith was much cooler than Helms Deep. The siege of Minas Tirith was better than Helms Deep, but the swarm at the Black Gate, while I understand was supposed to look insect-like and menacing, came off as a little unrealistic (for a fantasy movie at least!), the orcs/goblins/uruk-hai were a little fast in surrounding them, I think, but damn, it was pretty "oh-SHIT" inducing. The ending...oh the ending. End it at Gandalf/Frodo/Bilbo leaving...please end here....please- oh crap. Look. Hobbiton. Yay. I understand it's the point of the original story. Hobbits. But hey, it wasn't even burned down, and God is Samwise's woman homely! He was one of the most consistent actors in the movie and he gets that, while Frodo goes off to the land of the elves...unfair! hehe. A little too long of an ending, and it absolutely RUINS the pacing at the end.
Now, to compare to the Matrix Trilogy...
The Matrix: Awesome, awesome movie. Groundbreaking, original. All things the Trilogy of the Ring cannot be in movie form. Our imaginations preceeded it. The Matrix was new, fresh, mind-blowing. The Trilogy of the Ring is a great realization of an established fantasy world, but it is NOT mind-blowing. Cool yes, mind-blowing, no.
The Matrix Reloaded: Okay, weakest of the trilogy. Plot progression movie. Much better fight scenes (faster, more intense, better directed/edited), especially the melee brawl between the werewolves/vampires and Neo. That was SO cool. Bad acting.
The Matrix Revolutions: Almost perfect...except for the little Indian girl. UGH, who cast HER! "I can not act one - bit. I am - a kid - yes." Grargggg. Now, the battle for the Dock, THAT was an impressive battle. It was gritty, in your face, and was a CONSTANT source of anxiety. Everything depended on that battle. It was hopeless. Deaths were frequent, but poignient. Monica Belucci is SO hot. The ending was exactly what I hoped for, and MAN, anyone who thought it sucked and that ROTK's ending was better should seriously set aside their biases and watch them over again, independant of their opinions on either universe.
Phew, that was a lot. I loved the LOTR trilogy, plus it holds great sentimental value (my girl and I had our first date on Dec. 20 2001 for the first one. We've seen each one afterward for the first time with each other...ahhh...it was so sad when the last one closed...sigh).
But best movie trilogy of all time, it is not. Star Wars Episodes 4-6 continues to be the perfection of movie craft, maybe not in individual parts, but overall effect and world integrity. LOTR is second. Matrix Trilogy is third. The Indiana Jones trilogy is next. Then the Alien Trilogy (yes, the third movie, in it's re-cut version, is pretty damn awesome), the fourth one moves this series to the end of my list. Then the Godfather trilogy.
There's my 459 cents.
