Why does every site do this?

I have some of my Active X controls disabled to cut down on spyware, adware...etc.etc.
I've noticed recently that Rage 3D and Warp2Search have given me problems being
able to view pages. The little box pops up...

"Active X controls are disabled for this page and Browser..."

I click ok. Lately Rage 3D and Warp won't even load pages.

Here it's a little better, as I still get the pop-up box, but then the page will load
after I click ok.

I guess my question is:

Why do these websites need to use Active X controls. I'm not talking about Active scripting
but the seemingly meaningless Active X controls. Are they/you trying to stick cookies
and files to clog my f*cking computer up? I don't want sh1t on my pc. This sh1t is really
beginning to piss me off. All sites seem to be doing this spying tracking bullsh1t.

Get the f*ck out of my business before i f*cking skull you is what I feel like.

Anyway, what's up with all this sh1t?

mostly? for adds.. so that the ads can track your click through... but usally also the track alot more (like evey site you visit, and for long eough they can tell who you are 2)... just crack down on you cookies and you'll have less problems/worries.

got a hardcopy of the article below, no link to it..
not sure thiss can be a brightside of Active X to you..

Pros and Cons of ActiveX and DHTML Controls. by Rajesh Krishnamurthy.

Introduction:
This document shows a Comparison study of web pages using simple ASP and Pages using ActiveX Controls. By the End of this document, we arrive at a conclusion of using the better Technology.

What is an ActiveX?

If you use a Computer, Microsoft’s ActiveX is probably part of your life. The ActiveX technologies have become an essential part of Microsoft applications and tools; they are finding their way into Microsoft operating systems.

All ActiveX Technologies are built using Microsoft’s Component Object Model (COM).But the obvious next step – defining ActiveX to encompass all COM based technologies—is wrong.

But didn’t ActiveX grow out of Object Linking and Embedding (OLE)? In fact, wasn’t ActiveX just a new name for what once called OLE? The answer to both the questions is “Well, sort of”

So what is Active X? Active X is a downloadable program that allow user to do many things. Since the time the internet came on-line, many users complained that the web pages are too static and very passive in the way of interactivity. Active X consisits of active controls and active documents bringing together the technology that allows programs work together.

The initial need of Active X derived from the demand of the Web designers who wanted more interactive web pages. Simple text hyper links and graphics were not enough, and hence the programming language JAVA was created. Through the development of this and the early plug-ins (programs that run code along side the web browser but not in it,) web pages became far more interactive with audio and moving images. Microsoft’s response for the plug-ins and JAVA was Active X, a slimmed down net workable version of OLE. OLE is where one application can talk to another program under a Windows environment.

Some Features and Attributes of Active X technology is as follows..
1. Active X scripting is used in Microsoft internet Explorer to provide language-independent script handling capabilities
2. Active X documents supported by Active X means you can use the browser to view any Microsoft software application with that applications native toolbar, menu and other interface elements. This is also advantageous because you can use existing documents on the Internet without having to save them to HTML format.
3. Active X controls are the features that made this research interesting. These are actual software components embedded in web pages that run in the browser. If you visit a web page that uses, Microsoft's Internet Explorer will automatically check to see if you have the needed control installed, if you do not, it installs it using their Authenticode.

Appreciate the input, but from what I understand Active X controls, while allowing
a pretty little butterfly to float across a website I'm looking at, (vomits)
also allows things such as Trojans, adware, and worse...HI-JACK WARE to get
into your system.

I had that Xupiter thing infect me once a few months and HDD's back, and
had a hell of a time getting that sh1t out of my computer. I was so mad
that I was already checking into airfare rates to Hungary, (Xupiter's HQ)
in order to commit some very violent acts upon the people who run, create
and condone such garbage.

Things like that are unnecessary and an invasion of one's privacy.

Personally, nothing will piss me off more than having my rights and privacy
invaded, or being told what to do by someone or something, that has
no authority to do so. Just common sense.

As Neon said, they're used in the ad code, and it's not something we can control. If we want to keep the site going we need financial support, so we needs ads, if we want ads we gotta have active x. If anything the active on here and Rage3D basically is just so the ad company doesn't show you the same ad all the time and rotates or shows you an ad specific to your country/region. I'm afraid it's the way of the world now. Or the internet at least.

Simple answer to thread question

The need for money.

The more indepth answer

The sites you mention get masses of hits each month, and also masses of bandwidth. The internet like most things in life, isnt free. Sad thing is, if everyone who used their favourite sites donated a little money then there would be no need for ads. Of course this doesnt happen, its an unpleasant situation.
