??? help with sound

im at college and i cant get any sound out of the comp at all. i have put headphones on the cd-rom but no luck so they havent got a audio cable from it to the sound card.

they have a realTek AC97 soundcard on the back which shud b instaled with drivers but i cant check because of the 'security filters'

i am just curious as to whether anyone has any ideas... cos i wood realy love to drown out my lecturer with some sweet tunes. i am using winamp and have tried different out-put plug-ins

dont know much about the comps here.. but they are running XP

System Specs

well if your playing a CD the jack on the drive should work with or without an audio cable, if your playing files then you'll need to be plugged in at the back into the sound card, assuming the volume isn't muted or sound card disabled it should work.
