AMD Processor in the box...
Has anyone purchased the Retail processor in the box cpu from amd? I was just wondering how the heatsink/fan was the came in these kits. Any input will be helpful. I want to get the Athlon XP 2700+ Retail, mainly because of the 3 year warranty that the retail version offers. I dont oc at all so I hope that the kit will keep the new cpu at a comfortable temp...

..... what type....barton..... thoroughbred?..... i know the bartons ( my own opinion)..... are excellent.... it has some copper on it that really helps out... i've overclocked my barton 2500+ to 3000+ no problems..and with only a 2-3*C increase in temp.... my current idle is 32-36*C.... and my high load is no higher then 42-46*C...(the last being core temp)

The retail AMD CPUs seldom cost much more than their OEM counterparts, in my experience, so there really is no reason not to buy one.
Stock heatsinks are adequate --they are very decent especially for the newish CPUs-- but investing in a good third party HSF is never a bad idea.

It comes with phase change material on it. Seriously, you'll be looking at about 50C under load.

The heatsink I got in my retail 2500+ was all aluminum with a 60mm fan at around 3800-4000 rpm and some sort of thermal pad/stuff on the bottom. It was ok to start with, but with the normal Texas weather and the fact that I'm used to the heat means the air conditioner was never on all the much, so I was getting between 52C and 58C for normal temps. Once I started overclocking it reached 65C fairly quickly, so an SLK-800A and Tt Smartfan2 were in order. Now the temp is usually 40C with the fan barely audible over the other case fans. I am currently at 2.3ghz (11.5 200mhz). I really should have got the normal universal slk-800 so that I could just get a new bracket to install it on another cpu, but I won't be upgrading again for a good while.... I hope.

My buddy bought the retail Barton 2500+ and he gets 49C idle with two intakes, and two exhausts and pretty good airflow, so you weren't too far off DriveEuro.
