Music That Doesn't Get Enough Credit
Rap.
Yes, you heard me. Rap. I know that what seems like an overwhelming majority of you dudes out there like metal or some other type of rock, but hear me out.
I think many people dismiss rap as being over-sensationalized, excessively violent music in which the artists simply rip-off a few beats from some other artist, and talk really fast. I don't think this is fair.
While it is true a great deal of rappers sample tracks from other musicians, a lot of them concoct their own beats. Some of them are repetitious and annoying, others are quite wicked. But the emphasis in hip hop is OBVIOUSLY not placed so much on the actual music music but on the words.
I think in order to really appreciate a rapper's talent, one has to really think about what it takes to deliver that many words while making sense and never missing a beat. There is far more lyrical content in your standard rap track than there is in some rock ALBUMS. It's not a matter of just rhyming, you have to be saying something! And that's hard to do when you're rhyming a million words a minute. It takes a real wordsmith to keep putting out words and making new rhymes, and a lot of rap is quite poetic. It takes talent to write a rap song --nevermind perform one!-- and I don't see how anyone can contest this!
I said this in another post, but I'll repeat it. While some rap is tasteless, it can also be tasteful and expressive. A few examples would have to be De La Soul's latest hit, "Baby Phat."
My bounds, on your touchy subject --
Your weight!
Your shape's not what I date
It's you
My crew don't mind it thick
Every woman ain't a video chick
Or runway model anorexic
...
Tryin to lose that bottom? Girl, you been right
That's a positive song! There's a lot of bad shit, but there are gems, too, see? Not all rap is about blunts, 40s, and bitches. I've heard good, expressive, and emotional songs from a lot of rappers --even Eminem-- and I don't think rap completely deserves the gangsta-kill-'em-all image it's given.
Rap does not receive the credit it deserves. Anyone that can say it's easy to rap is a fool or a hater. I'd like to see them freestyle*!
---
* Freestyle: Improv' rap. This shit is AMAZING. The talent it must require is unbelievable.

well everyone has an opinion and certainly everyones tastes vary.
im not even going to talk about Rap..... better I dont, just like I dont bother talking about the new breed of guitar players who sit in their rooms and can play scales with immense speed, and yet with very little if any feeling whatsoever.
but I dont see how anything can compare to the pain, agony or emotion that can come across from a guitar in the hands of a master as he bends the notes in a blues track, bearing his soul to the listener.
music transcends lyrical content.

Im not much into rap. The only rap I like is the pop-rap or what u call stuff like Eminem. And I know alot of rap freaks that hate the guys... so .. ?
A band that doesnt get enough Credit.
Luca Turilli and his band Rhapsody.
If you like metal with feeling. This music rocks.
Try getting "Luca Turilli - Legend Of Steel", "Luca Turilli - Lord Of The Winter Snow" or "Luca Turilli - King Of The Nordic Twilight". All from his album by the same name as the last son I listed.

Well, I'm not much into classic rock or blues (although I do enjoy listening to Clapton every once in a while), but I do know what you mean. It's like the Beatles song "Something" -- it doesn't even need to have words or singing, that song is just fuckin' beautiful. However, I think there is something very powerful about a tight rhyme with a message. It may sound cliche`d, but a lot of rap is a lot like poetry. Words aren't wasted, they're chosen for maximum impact, and they jive with a rhythmn. Surely this takes talent.
Eminem is good, but so is Xzibit, De la Soul, Busta, and various others. And the best of them all is Tash of Tha Liks. If you haven't heard Tash, you don't know what lyrical flow is about.

I once listened to this one rap song off the net, and I HATED IT, but when I read the lyrics, they were very VERY nice (and very sad too):
Quote:
If you're readin' this, then I finally did it
I'm sorry I didn't say good-bye, there was no time
Understand I was stressed
Livin' day to day was hard, and I gave it my best
But there was nothin' left, for me in this world
To convince me to stay
Now I'm long gone away
Don't you do that, don't you start with tears
Just remember the time we spent over the years
Never cry, never think bad of me
What's done is done, and that's the way it had to be
I need you to be strong from me
Say a prayer everyday in my memory
I'm sure it's helpin' me
To earn my feathers, to get some wings
And a halo and a harp and Angelic things
And even though I'm gone, and outta sight
Never worry about me, I'm alright
|
I COULD NOT believe that this was the song that I just heard. I think some rappers need to learn to stop ruining their lyrics by "singing" them the way they do.

Rhythmn and matching a beat add a lot to a song, I think, but that really is a matter of personal preference and taste.
Here're some good lyrics. I think this rap song is beautiful, lyrically.
When I look you in your eyes I can see my own
Straight love manifested in flesh and bone
You's a breath of fresh air in this world of shit
You was born to be a soldier don't ever forget
Hit back when hit
Use force that's effective
All these bitches and women
Son, please be selective
This is California can't stick your dick in everything
We will survive necessarily by any means
..
If the time ever comes that I meet my match
Take control of my assets
Fuck startin' from scratch
Take care of your mother
Keep yourself on track
Just cause niggas get behind you don't mean they got your back
Beware of the serpent
Cause there's a time in life the mothafucker will strike
And try to make you loose sight
Don't be a fake mothafucker tryin' to keep shit real
..
You are the foundation
Begining of a new generation
I remember hospital hallway pacin'
I was anxious as fuck to see your face shine
Only to find that yours looked like mine
So it's like I'm livin' twice at the exact same time
In this life you can't press stop
Then press rewind
Gotta live to the fullest never follow behind no man
Have your own plan, expand your mind
Ain't no paper thin game to raise wannabe thugs
This is nothing but love
Via sattelite Muggs
Take heed when it's your turn to bring new life
Make sure it's the woman you gonna make your wife
Be prepared for the worst
But expect the best
No matter where life takes you
Come home to the West
Survival takes more than just gats and guns
That's words to live by
From a father to a son

As a warning if you like rap don't read my message
Alright I HATE rap. Why do I hate rap? Because it's nothing more than a bunch of idiots 'talking' about stuff that makes absolutly NO sense or reason. The common phrases are nothing but "fuck you in the ass, suck my dick, fuck you in the ass, smokin' weed, suck my dick" there may be one instance in 1000000 that there will be anything else.
So why do people like it? Because they can move to it.. to me that means nothing, music that just makes you dance is not music to me.. music to me is a sound that frees your spirit and mind.
My final reason for hating rap.. because rappers have NO talent, they can't play a damn intrument, and turntables does NOT count. All they do is talk, and don't give me that "but they write lyrics" crap.. because I'm a poet and can write that junk in 2 minutes.
Sorry about the tension, but I'm a total anti-rap person who lives in a city full of white people who think they're totally "bling bling" or something.

Must rap is like that. The rap I listen to isn't. 90% of rappers just ryhm words together that make no sense, i.e. Nas, Jay-Z, P. Diddy, ect. The other 10% can put together words in a ryhm that make sense. IMHO Eminem even though he's white and must rappers are black, he somehow makes that 10%. If you could get past that block that says all rap sucks, and must of it does, listen to that other 10% you will see just why people like rap so much.
I mean I like all music, rap, rock, R&B and pop because most of it has a good rythm. But metal I can't stand, I mean whats so good about metal? The fact theres some guy screeming crazy sh*t I can't understand kinda scares me. Bands like Korn, Disturbed and Ozzy all sound like devil woreshipers to me (not saying they are) when they sing. Although some of Korn's songs are good, I find most of it depressing.
Just my opinion.

That's like saying all metal is about Satan. Simply not true, but it's the reigning stereotype. Bah, well, whatever. It's not like I can convince you otherwise. You're wrong, but you're probably obstinate in your ignorance.

That may be true for some people, but I do - not - dance. I like some rap because I like its sound, I respect the skills, and I like the raw emotions of it. Some of it's fun to listen to, and some of it is relaxing (like Xzibit). If those are bad reasons to like music, sorry.

Like I said in my previous post, if you can't see how it takes talent to rap, then you're either a hater or ignorant. I'm sorry, but it's true. It's not just talking, unless you talk in tune with a tight rhythmn and beat. I wish you guys would quit with that horseshit.
If you're a poet, then great, you have talent.

Well, I consider myself to be somewhat intelligent --and people tell me I'm somewhat articulate-- but I like (some) rap. You don't have to be a g-dawg to like rap, just like you don't need to be a stoned loser to like rock.
That said, I'm sorry you have to deal with that type of person.

Damn there is alot of generalization in here. I am not a fan f rap either. But I actually like Eminem, both the music and lyrics are good. So what if he swears a bit? Hes lyrics ARE better than the average.
Besides how the hell can you diss rap lyrics when there are things B Spears and sharika around?? Talk about lame lyrics.
And Dom, that is not metal you are describing. That is Black Metal. I dont like it, I think its stupid. But there is ALOT of metal I do like. Please do me a favor and download "Luca Turilli - King Of The Nordic Twilight" somewhere. Its all good Besides I find it a bit funny that u speak against generalizing about rap, and then say something like that about metal.
This is what I hate. R&B, I have never heard a single song that I like. 50% of what they play on the hit stations is R&B. And I can't stand it. I think it os so 'whiney'.

I didn't generalize metal, I said I liked some of it, and some I don't like. But I do dislike 'black metal' as you put it, which is only part of the whole rock/metal genre. So it's not generalization. Anyway it's just my opinion, don't mean a thing.

You should give Xzibit a listen; he is wicked!

TRUE THAT! I can't stand how R&B singers can take a monosyllabic word like "you" or "love" and sing it for like twenty minutes! It drives me up a wall. But, I think there's at least one good song in every genre. As far as R&B goes, that honor goes to Brian McKnight's "6, 8, 12." I hate the genre, but that song's beautiful. I've been in a long-distance relationship on-and-off for the past two years, and I can really identify with song. You ought'a give that song a listen.

OH GOD NO! NO NO NO NO NO!
Jay-Z and R. Kelly are putting out a CD together and I CANNOT imagine a worse CD. At all. I am at a loss. I would rather listen to cats fucking than that no-talent rapper and that assclown of a singer perform together. I'd rather take a Black & Decker drill and shove it into my ear. I'd rather lick a cheese grater. I'd rather, in fact, run an Intel processor than listen to that pigshit.
So, in summation, NO R. KELLY! FOR THE LOVE OF GOD!
Let me put it another way:
