Car problems...any suggestions?

OK so I own a 1995 Pontiac Bonneville SE with about 88,000 miles on it. I got a new water pump put on recently which costed a total of $370 and now I think I need a second repair. The problem is this, sometimes when I start my car the engine runs for a few seconds and the tachometer reves a little then everything just dies out. I was told to try some fuel injector cleaner to see if that would help, but I still have the same problem. I talked to two other people and they said I would need a new computer put in. One man I talked to said it costed him $250 for a new computer and installation. So for all you car people what do you think my problem may be? Do you think it may be the computer and how much would this run me? Thanks guys!

If this is something you're wanting to fix yourself, you'll do well to go to your local parts store and get a Computer Code Reader for your make and model of car. They usually run from $20 - 40. While there, you'd also likely want to pick up a Hayne's Manual for the car.

This type of problem can be anything from a clogged fuel filter to a faulty idle sensor....to.....you name it. The code reader will narrow it down.

I recently had my own vehicle drop into low gear while driving down a side street. I couldn't drive it over 35 mph and was 40 miles from home. It ended up being a Speed Sensor that had to be replaced. I did it myself. The part was less than $30.

I think autozone will hook up a code reader for free. Then hopefully you can get the code to see if something else is the problem. Sounds like maybe the computer needs to be reset.
