What ever happened to the great guitar players

I listen to music as often as anyone, and it seems what passes for guitar virtuoso now seems to diminish my appreciation for the great ones of years past. I began to learn guitar at an early age after I saw the Woodstock films and played up until my injury years ago. I still enjoy the older stuff from various artists...Can anyone give me some feedback on some new and exciting guitar players because I am afraid what passes for good guitar playing now as really lowered my expectations....

the list goes on....whatever happend to the arena style rock that these guys put out...where has it all gone....can anyone recommend a guitar player worthy of the caliber of playing I heard in the 70s and 80's and hell even in the 90's...I sure would appreciate it.

Arena Style Rock:

Richie Sambora - Specifically look for a track from his second solo album..

Album Name: Undiscovered Soul
Track: Who I am

The above track was recorded in one take and has some of the best guitar work of recent times.

His 2 albums (Stranger in This Town and Undiscovered Soul) are actually quite good, Eric Clapton plays on the first one and its a very bluesy, soulful, turn of the lights and light a candel or two album. The second is more mainstream rock.

Underrated Guitarists that are worth a listen - Especially Live:

Prince - maybe someone here can say what the best examples of his work are...i dont have the albums to hand
Bruce Springsteen - Try "Live in NYC"

Tom Morello from Rage Against The Machine and Audioslave - Very unique guitar style.

well you left Brian May off your list jeff, one of the most influential and harmonically driven guitarists of the last 30 years.......

as for "new" guitarists....... they arent really many of that caliber anymore, some decent band guitarists, but solos arent "cool" anymore, well thats their excuse.......

As for newer artists I really enjoy Colin James, and here's one that none of you will have heard of unless you follow the Canadian blues world, but check out Charlie A'Court

halen still plays, but he had a pretty bad illness, rhoads is dead.

blues saraceno's "plaid" is a good album if you missed it......

yes jeff healeys first was great..... he is now producing and doing the jazz thing these days...... in reference to Halen and Rhoads I just thought they belonged on the list.....

I actually still listen to his last solo effort.., He has become a christian right?
I saw Jeff Healy in Florida years ago, and enjoyed his Hendrix covers a great deal..
Neal Schon and Craig Chaquico are good too, but they seem to be doing jazz now.
What can I say about Eddie, hasn't been the same since Valerie Bertinelli left...
And Randy Rhoads....I really got burned out on he comparisons between him and many other great guitarists, regardless of his skill.
And the White Stripes, my son listens to it all the time, maybe I should hijack his copy and listen, I saw them on the tele and I wasn't impressed, but hey gotta start somewhere...
And Prince...yeh he is good...and he is wierd...and he bears some scrutiny and patience..
I can still recall Purple Rain and Lets go crazy as well...
I failed to list all of the guitarists but I would like to know what yall think of Frank Zappa..
I know he is dead, and I bought everything he produced and some post mortem efforts by his label, but I enjoy it all...I love the Shiek Yer Bootie album, stunning stuff...
I remember the group missing persons, and the guitarists was pretty darn good, he went on to session with many other artists, but I cannot recall his name at all....sigh..
I guess I am too darn old...
Saw Richie Sambora in a club in Tokyo....drunk and silly, playing an acoustic..I was not impressed..
but his solo effort is okay, just cannot stand his partner in crime..
P.s. anyone like Zak Wylde?

Black Label Society, he thinks Zak Wylde is talented and "awesome" I tried to listen to some of it, but it didn't impress nearly as much as the guitarist for Godsmack

I listened to rising force and I was impressed, but I listened to all his efforts on a sunday afternoon and it seemed to all sound the same...you know Tuetonic rock...Funny thing though, I forgot to mention the Schenker brothers, they were awesome....I should have added them to the list as well....I love the song "The Zoo"....

no way man.....I didn't know that....I still listen to budgie and most of the music is in my opinion timeless, raw manchester style music like Black Sabbath in my opinion...different style, but raw appeal....I love Black Velvet Stallion

there are many bands that play budgie music here in my town,they still bring in the crowds in Cardiff too, I think they are worth a listen as well....look for the song Napoleon, it is awesome...really good stuff

Just wanted to remind everyone of the late Albert Collins, sometimes known as 'the ice man'.

And for someone playing hot licks today, Buddy Guy. Yeah I know he's as old as the hills but he still plays the blues.....

Speakin' of which, Johnny Winter would blow the doors off half those listed in the original post.

albert collins is damn good, just like Robert Johnson....I love the blues, but it isn't arena style rock...but it has it's own place...
