Ha, that's like saying, Don't drive your car over 45 MPH, it won't last as long. Or, don't buy the new shock and tires for your car to get a better ride- the old ones are better because the factory put them on.

I gotta laugh at people who think overclocking is some sort of abuse or sin- it's just like giving your car a tune-up, keeping an eye on the heat guage, and going 90 miles an hour down the highway when the posted speed limit is 55mph, but you know damn well your car could do 110mph all day long no problem... Thank god there's no overclocking police. Man, let me have a little fun at least.

its just a lack of education to be fair to these people. you are stressing the components more, but most people who overclock are aware of this and have additional cooling. and those who dont, should keep these quotes in their sigs

also the whole "it shortens the life of your components" aguement is void for most OCers anyhow. I know I will buying new hardware looooong before I would burn any out

yep, if the life span shortens to a year/year and a half of constant use for example. ill have 2 more rigs by that stage

Yea~i 'm currently using an air-con and a fan to cool my "naked" CPU and stuff.........it's ok!

Yup. The fact is, overclocking probably DOES shorten the lifespan of your components, extra cooling or not. But who cares? Everyone knows at least person with the 6-year old Gateway that still runs, right? CPUs don't go bad for like 10 years! Even if you halved the lifespan of your processor, why is that even a real concern? Are you going to be using the same proc' in five years?

I always assumed that when your cpu goes "bad" from OC'ing that it just won't sustain an OC anymore- I figured with proper cooling it would still run fine at stock speed even after a life of being moderately OC'd.

But anyway- I'm sure there is ten million shades of gray in between the CPU blowing up one day, and working fine for someone's grandmother for checking e-mail till the year 2032.
I just don't hear of that many people saying, dohoo, my cpu blew up yesterday- and the people that do say that usually know why it happened, like a human error in the placement of the heatsink, or leaving it on for 70 hours at 100% at the limit of speed with inadequate cooling while they went out of town or something. I bet if you just leave the OC at 9/10ths with good cooling most cpu's last way longer than they are usefull. Unless maybe it's a certain batch of Pentium4's?

I've overclocking since the days when AMD made intel under license, never had a problem yet, but then I use Asus motherboards for the most part unless I am on a budget..all the MOM and POP stores that custom build here in town usually produce AMD rigs, and they are all overclocked for gamers. I can understand the ambievilence regarding over clocking, some folks adhere to Moores Law, and could care less what the machine is doing in two years..just build a new one right? My little beasty was state of the art when it came out and that was a long time ago, I just find new tweaks...kinda like making your old Hemi Cuda keep up with the noisy Honda's, I know machines are getting leaner and meaner, but it sure is fun to tweak and overclock!!

I think we all learn alot when we take it to the limit and we all share that info here, I have learned a few things and it really helped me out!!!
