Default Post Wish Us Luck, It's Off To Scout Camp!!

Getting ready for a week of ?H*ll? as the adminstrator of a Cub Scout day camp. Today is going to be a busy day as we have our staff in for a quick training and setup day. After being around 100 screaming 7-11 year old boys for a week, I'm sure I'll be a nervous wreck. Sometimes the parents can whine worse then the boys. Gimmie strength, how did I ever get into this????

I've been through the entire scouting movement from cubs upto ventures. I've also attained the Queens Scout Award - the highest accolade the movement can bestow Oh yeah - got to meet the Queen (well, she just kinda walked past me during the parade)

I know what a load of brats/thugs/alcies (well, in ventures anyway ) we were, so best of luck keeping them in check

Default Post Queen?

I thought "Order of the Arrow" was the highest achievable scout rank?

Not in the UK. As you Yankee-doodle-dandies don't have a Queen, you have Order of the Arrow instead.

So - do your guys get to fire arrows at Indians instead of meeting a Queen? Damn - the UK can be so backwards and traditional at times :/

Default Post No indians.

It's just some Uber-leet secret-scout thing that happens after Eagle Scouts in the States here. You can't try out or apply, they just choose you if they deem you worthy.

Congrats on the Queen Scout Award, I just read something about it recently in Scouting Magazine. This is my sons last year as a cub, he bridges up to Boy Scouts in Feb. Trying to get him in the max camps and activities I can to keep him occupied and to get him ready for the next step. In reference to shooting arrows at Indians, before he bridges up to scouting he will receive the Arrow of Light. It is the highest award offered to cubs that remains on the Scout uniform. He'll get to fire a flaming arrow over a lake at night. It's quite a magical site to see the boys firing the arrows and having the Scoutmaster welcome them to the troop. Maybe it's not like meeting the Queen but it is something my son will remember his whole life.

I've got a nagging feeling that bronze, silver and gold arrows were handed out as badges during either cubs or scouts (not ventures). IIRC the gold arrow is the highest award you can get as a scout (in the UK) as the Queens Scout award is reserved for Venture Scouts. Maybe you've taken this arrow thing and changed it slightly

I'm intrigued now
/me runs off to hunt the 'net for more info

Default Post Order of the Arrow

Nope, it ain't a pin. It's a white sash about 2" wide with an embroidered red arrow on it about 8" long that goes from your upper-right shoulder and drapes down across you.

The only person I've ever heard of it from was my father when he showed me his arrow, he was big into scouts. I guess shortly after he made Eagle Scout he got tapped for the Order.

Sorry I can't give you more info, I never even made Eagle Scout. (But I was a good scout. )

Usually Scouts are tapped out for Order of the Arrow before Eagle Scout, but I've only witnessed two Order of the Arrow ceremonies. Opening day for camp went about as I expected, the special events area did not show up until 45 minutes after camp started which threw the whole schedule off for a short while. Managed to catch it all back up and by the end of the night everthing worked out well. The cubs did not care, they enjoyed it all especially archery and the bb range. I'm so tired I feel like I've been dragged behind a 4x4 on a bumpy road right now. Must sleep....dozing off at the keyboardzzzzzzzzzz
