Austrian admits 24-year abuse of daughter in cellar

AMSTETTEN, Austria (Reuters) - A 73-year-old Austrian man has confessed to imprisoning his daughter in a windowless cellar for 24 years and fathering her seven children, police said on Monday.

A 42-year-old woman had told police on Sunday that her father, Josef Fritzl, lured her into the basement of the block where they lived in the town of Amstetten in 1984 and drugged and handcuffed her before imprisoning her.

"(Fritzl) has now said that he locked up his daughter for 24 years and that he alone fathered her seven children and that he locked them up in the cellar," Franz Polzer, head of the criminal investigations unit in the province of Lower Austria told Reuters by telephone.

Terrible in every way. I'd like to think I can't be shocked anymore, but I have to admit, this is somewhat shocking. Sickening, the things people to do.

I saw this on the news but jeebus christ, didn't the woman mother like 6 children to her own father or something like that?
Sickest damned thing i've ever heard, throw the bastard in jail and watch him rot

Horrendously enough, it didn't shock me much. Made me absolutely resent the bastard that did it though. and to his own daughter?

There is too many stable elements in this world to keep the anarchy away. And for the record this isn't the first time this kind of thing has happened or not the last one.

good point, (I think) sequestering a breeding female and producing young is not new. It is all part and parcel of animal husbandry, unfortunately it happened to this child and doubtless will happen again. I would be interested to know how this will be fought in court. When women are mere chattle and the lives of their children decided by others then this kind of crime against humanity will continue. Servitude and the anguish of slavery is appalling, but well documented and even endorsed by many cultures. Welcome to humanity.

How can a parent do this to their child though?

My first thought wasn't about how bad this was for the daughter, it was her children that never saw the light of day. Can you imagine never seeing anything other than a dungeon until you were 19 years old? It doesn't seem like you'd be unhappy, simply because you never knew anything else, but then being able to see the world for the first time with a conscious mind. I definitely envy that experience (not the existence, but that specific experience)

A lodger at the Austrian house where a father allegedly imprisoned and abused his daughter says he saw another man go to the cellar where the abuse happened.

Alfred Dubanovsky told the BBC the man was introduced as a plumber.

His claim contradicts those of investigators who say the father, Josef Fritzl, had no accomplice.
