I Refuse to Join FaceBook!
I've been getting loads of invitations from family members and a few friends who are so excited about their new FaceBook profile and want me to take a look at it.
BUT....as many/most of you probably already know, you cannot simply VIEW these profiles unless you FIRST join FaceBook as well.
I refuse! I'm not particularly interested in devoting any of my time to putting yet another personal website up online that will/can only be used by people who will ALSO have to join up to see what I've put together.
I think it's insane the Microsoft actually has purchased a stake in this outrage!

Just leave your profile empty, it's basically what I've done.

I've not really embraced the "share every second of your life with the rest of the world" culture generated by MySpace and FaceBook and the like. I can't blame you Dyre, maybe we're just getting old

Facebook is the only social network worth signing up for, which I recently did, like Zelig mentioned you could leave your profile empty and use the account to keep in touch with people.

That's what e-mails are for. Everyone that needs to know anything about me is already in my address book.
AND, MY e-mail addy's are already in too many spammers' address books it gives me the creeps! I'm just glad my spam blockers work on most of my accounts.

I have a facebook account for like 4 years now. At first it was really good for getting in touch with childhood and high school friends but now that I'm out of college it's useful for keeping in touch with college friends and it's a networking tool.
Using it to talk to your family? You can probably do that with a phone. Plus you'll give your family members all kinds of dirt to use against you.

If you wouldn't share it with your family why would you want to share it with friends.

I find it and myspace, almost scary.
I was pressured by more than one people to join. How cool it is and all that. Few months ago I joined only to be able to access faster and easier some photos of a friend of mine. I signed in with a fake made up name and I haven't said to anyone other than her, that I have that account. I have posted like once or twice in it and played one game I think.
For some reason without me telling anyone about it, and fake name and info and all that, friends that I used to know, invited me. They of course with their real names etc. WTF?
My guess is either they constantly keep searching for people they know (email) if they have a page there, or they have allowed the system (facebook) to check their email address book (which for those that don't know, requires the user to give to Facebook their email address AND their PASSWORD for that email address).
I just don't know what to think of these people any more...
Anyway, I see this original friend working with her page and keep adding little shit like "games" and "Tests" etc, but more importantly perhaps, all the little details about what they are doing each day. It's like a big brother nightmare only that you willingly give out all the info yourself.
From what I understand there are more and more sites like the two above and they all have thousands and millions of members.
Have the population gone crazy all of a sudden? What the fuck is wrong with these people? Why would you want to share all your personal details with friends or "friends" and have them being able to basicaly stalk you from a distance?
The whole thing is sickening.

BlueMak, everyone is not that paranoid... You're not posting anything people can't find out (phone numbers, names and such are all available through the net)

Naw, it's not 'cause you're old. I'm one of the few kids in my high school who refuses to be a part of any social network website, i.e. Myspace, Facebook.
I can't stand that stuff. It's really disgusting. Everybody in my school who has a facebook is CONSTANTLY on it when they're on their computer. If they close the browser, they just go back on it 5 minutes later. And when the school finally blocked Facebook and the likes, everybody was freaking out because they couldn't get on in school.
That's why it pays off to be techy. Their firewall is REALLY easy to get passed, but only me and 3 other people know how to do it They don't block IP's of websites, so.. yah
Just like Dark Lord said.. whoever needs to contact me knows easily how to contact me

I use both facebok & myspace sparingly, I have managed to get in contact with people I haven't heard from for years - so that's the main benefit, but my myspace music profile is a good place to just chuck up a track i'm working on and get feedback from it

i can't stand facebook, but i do have an account.
What i hate is all the AD related crap on peoples pages. I know it's an 'AD supported business' but it 's hard to believe that facebook associates its self with some of the worst types of SPAM BASED ads & JUNK such as dating sites for example, and STILL expects it self to be seen as a reputable website/social network!.
If that amount of rubbish was on any other website, you would steer well clear!
There just so greedy for the cash, that they will except any old web based company's rubbish advertised crap,..regardless.
All it's doing is giving them a really bad reputation.
And it will cost them there business in the end because there user base will eventually have enough of it and leave! And who's going to want to continue paying for AD space on a 'social network' with no users?

i hate the direction it has gone to... it was a networking site for students, now everyone has it even my doctor... fuck i have to set privacy settings for them. it was more fun when it was just students. in addition, those stupid ads and applications ruins it. i have no applications except the songs i like that is all.

I'm probably the only one over here that doesn't have nor care about myspace, facebook, hi5 etc etc. Most of the people that i know that have and use the sites do it to try and get
"new friends", meaning girls that wanna get "freaky".

I agree with Dyre. Watch some Dr. Phil and you'll see the insanity these social networking sites breed in teens, let alone adults who are supposed to have their common senses intact. Besides, these sites and cell phone texting SMS devices etc. are just leading to more and more degeneration in language skills, not to mention coprophrasia.

I like Facebook because it keeps my family and friends close, unlike the myspace mess. But I just use myspace to perve on chicks and advertise my music

I joined Facebook just to talk to a girl I met through friends at a party.
Due to this, I rate it very highly.
