unfair dismissal?
An air stewardess recently got fired for these comforting words in the pre-flight safety check "In the unlikely event of engine failure we will go into the ground like a fucking dart!"

LOL!
But then, the air bags that come down relax the passengers more than anything else. This is so that there's no mass hysteria (or not as much as there should be) when the Captain announces "Well folks, thats #4 engine gone. We'll be cruising for the duration at 31,000 feet. No sorry, 28,000. Make that 23,000. No need to panic folks, this baby can cruise at 11,000 safely."

That's a bit harsh. Maybe the swearing was a little over the top. If she said it jovially and without the swearing she shouldn't have been fired

u cant glide to safety when u have all engines down, the plane wont be stable.
also, a landing on land (not runway or street) or water has probably a 0.01% chance of being successful.

Maybe you could in a small plane if you're close to the runway, but generally if you're in a heavy jet, you can't glide very far without any engines.

it depends on what type conditions your in.
If your flying with the jetstream you could easily glide.
if your flying against the jetstream odds are you would smack the ground like a dart.

if you're flying with the jetstream, the plane won't get enough lift to stay up.
i have heard of one somewhat successful (no one was hurt) landing when a 737 ran out of fuel. without fuel, the plane lightened up quite a bit, and they were within 5 miles of an abandoned runway. needless to say, the landing gear couldn't sustain an unaided landing, and the jet went for a pavement slide. everybody got out ok though.
