Ya, back when I got broadband, which was like 3-4 years ago, my first download was Star Office 5. I remember downloading all 50+megs of it with dial up.... took a couple weeks of regular usage, which was about 2-3 hours a day after school. When that download started on dial up, it was about 4-5 K a second, but on the cable connection it rocketed to 500 K a second!
It was Excite@home cable internet, but they tanked soon after, leaving AT&T to hold up the massive network. Download speeds dropped to 180K, but still, it's 180K > 5K. Upload stayed the same at 16K. Along with that I started downloading some music I wanted for a while on... I forget (was it Napster? Probably.), but the connections were fast and consistant. I also had an old account on www.streamload.com , which back then it was free for everyone but with dial up I never saw much use of it except for a few documents. Needless to say, finding forums of people to fill streamload requests was pretty easy, and in one weekend my bro and I downloaded over 30gigs of anime! I couldn't burn cd's fast enough because we had a 4x USB cd-rw drive! Our two 10 gig harddrives couldn't last with this kind of use... so a 40 gig was bought. It soon filled up too, so a 60gig was bought and this is where we stand right now. I have tons of cd's and even a few dvd-r's now filled with movies, anime, music, and software. Now the cable internet company is Comcast since AT&T can't keep @home, and downloads are up to ~220K and uploads are up to 32K!
Once you have broadband, you will begin to eat and sleep in front of the moniter..... I'm not joking.

-just be sure to stand up every now and then and stretch or you'll have an ass as flat as an ironing board and limbs as stiff as a rusted bolt.

eyeguy is correct.
i ended up building a second box last year just so i could render vid and burn cd's while my primary box stayed in countless download queues and gamed.
