The songs that help you through....
So a lot of us fall back on music to help us get through some of the tough times, or just cheer them up. Post the band, song name, lyrics, and what they do for you. Just curious what everyone else listens to when they are down or even up.
Ill start with one of mine:
Band: Alkaline Trio
Song: If you had a bad time
-------
If you had a bad time
At one of my parties
Well I wouldn't expect to be seeing you soon and that's fine
You have to know what and why
Those things make you happy
You have to know that a second guess ain't worth the try
Just some words of advice
Maybe you've heard them before but here goes
Just be true to yourself if it lands you in hell, well, at least now you know
Loud and clear is your heart, big and bright are the places you might someday go
With one million things holding you down, why you're one of those things
I don't know, no big deal gotta go
If you're up to your ears
In blood, sweat and wasted years
I'm hoping you're going to open your throat
And just scream
You have to know when, why
Which ones miss you when you die
You have to know that a second guess ain't worth the salt in your eyes
Just some words of advice
Maybe you've heard them before but here goes
Just be true to yourself if it lands you in hell, well, at least now you know
Loud and clear is your heart, big and bright are the places you might someday go
With one million things holding you down, why you're one of those things
I don't know, no big deal
It just sits on my shoulders you're breaking my neck
We get crazy with age now you're under my bed
And it's dark all the time, all the time
Just some words of advice
Maybe you've heard them before but here goes
Just be true to yourself if it lands you in hell, well, at least now you know
Loud and clear is your heart, big and bright are the places you might someday go
With one million things holding you down, why you're one of those things
I don't know, no big deal here I go.
The song reminds me that if things aren't right at the moment... remember what I want and make my life the way I want it to be. I don't have to live to a standard, just do what I want to do, no regrets, if I die burning... its what I chose.

Another song...
Band: Alkaline Trio
Song: Buried
-----
I'm awake
It was a half bad dream
That was way too long
My whole life it seemed
That someone started digging me up
Turned my headstone into dust
The sun was swallowed by the trees
The night was here for good
You pulled my hand and my head up
You put oxygen into my blood
You walked me through the gates like we were visitors for the day
You laid me down in the back seat
And you drove till I woke up to hear you say
You never lie but it's no fun to tell the truth
I guess I never loved but I will see what I can do
Got so much life to waste that I would take my days and hand them to you
I'm awake
It was a half bad dream
That was way too long
My whole life it seemed
That someone started digging me up
Turned my headstone into dust
I know you never lie but it's no fun to tell the truth
I guess I never loved but I will see what I can do
Got so much life to waste that I would take my days and hand them to you
I know you never lie but its so square to tell the truth
I guess I never loved but I will see what I can do
Got so much life to waste that I would take my days and hand them to you
To you.
The song IMO is just beautiful. The lyrics are touching, it is my girlfriend (soon to be fiance) and my song. She came from a very troubled family life. Although her family is awesome, the drama... is not. She was the crutch for all of her family members and it took a toll on her. For myself she has complimented me well. She has helped boost my confidence, make something of myself, and loosen up... live life the way its meant to be lived not worrying about everything. We have complimented eachother well and the song imo is just awesome.
Clip: http://www.last.fm/music/Alkaline+Trio/_/Buried
I could go on with songs... but these 2 hit the heart pretty heavy.
I would like no CRITICISM even if it is constructive on any music choice, genre, lyrics, whether its "ghey", "gay", "lame", "retarded", etc. The music posted here is what helps us make it to the next day with a smile, or help us enjoy life just that much more. Although you can say hey those lyrics are great... I'll have to check them out! or something like it.
Lets hear em!
Oh yeah without Zs post on stress ful day
John Butler Trio - Ocean
Instrumental
Its like floating to heaven or hell whichever you would like to go to, and if you believe in none then how about pure relaxation.

When I'm down, I either listen to a song with no lyrics (but has happy sounding music) or basically anything by Creedence Clearwater Revival.
With the instrumental, an example is Jessica by the Allman Brothers Band.
I dunno what it is about Creedence, but their songs always make me happy, like "Lookin' Out by Back Door"
Just got home from Illinois,
lock the front door, oh boy!
Got to sit down,
take a rest on the porch.
Imagination sets in,
pretty soon Im singin,
Doo, doo, doo,
lookin out my back door.
Theres a giant doing cartwheels, a statue wearin high heels.
Look at all the happy creatures dancing on the lawn.
A dinosaur victrola listning to buck owens.
Doo, doo, doo,
lookin out my back door.
Tambourines and elephants are playing in the band.
Wont you take a ride on the flyin spoon?
Doo, doo doo.
Wondrous apparition provided by magician.
Doo, doo, doo,
lookin out my back door.
Tambourines and elephants are playing in the band.
Wont you take a ride on the flyin spoon?
Doo, doo doo.
Bother me tomorrow, today, Ill buy no sorrows.
Doo, doo, doo,
lookin out my back door.
Forward troubles illinois, lock the front door, oh boy!
Look at all the happy creatures dancing on the lawn.
Bother me tomorrow, today, Ill buy no sorrows.
Doo, doo, doo,
lookin out my back door.

I love that song, have a good story about it that I was told.
My buddy's father was returning home from Vietnam, he'd just served three terms and was finally coming home. He grabbed a cab, and headed to his parents house. Walked up and opened the door "Hello, I'm home...", and nobody was there. Can you imagine that, coming home from three years in a war and nobody there to meet you. He stood at his back door and drank a beer, the radio was playing that song "...looking out my back door". Man that poetry.

In one single moment your whole life can turn 'round
I stand there for a minute starin' straight into the ground
Lookin' to the left slightly, then lookin' back down
World feels like it's caved in - proper sorry frown
Please let me show you where we could only just be, for us
I can change and I can grow or we could adjust
The wicked thing about us is we always have trust
We can even have an open relationship, if you must
I look at her she stares almost straight back at me
But her eyes glaze over like she's lookin' straight through me
Then her eyes must have closed for what seems an eternity
When they open up she's lookin' down at her feet
Dry your eyes mate
I know it's hard to take but her mind has been made up
There's plenty more fish in the sea
Dry your eyes mate
I know you want to make her see how much this pain hurts
But you've got to walk away now
It's over
So then I move my hand up from down by my side
It's shakin', my life is crashin' before my eyes
Turn the palm of my hand up to face the skies
Touch the bottom of her chin and let out a sigh
'Cause I can't imagine my life without you and me
There's things I can't imagine doin', things I can't imagine seein'
It weren't supposed to be easy, surely
Please, please, I beg you please
She brings her hands up towards where my hands rested
She wraps her fingers round mine with the softness she's blessed with
She peels away my fingers, looks at me and then gestures
By pushin' my hand away to my chest, from hers
Dry your eyes mate
I know it's hard to take but her mind has been made up
There's plenty more fish in the sea
Dry your eyes mate
I know you want to make her see how much this pain hurts
But you've got to walk away now
It's over
And I'm just standin' there, I can't say a word
'Cause everythin's just gone
I've got nothin'
Absolutely nothin'
Tryin' to pull her close out of bare desperation
Put my arms around her tryin' to change what she's sayin'
Pull my head level with hers so she might engage in
Look into her eyes to make her listen again
I'm not gonna fuckin', just fuckin' leave it all now
'Cause you said it'd be forever and that was your vow
And you're gonna let our things simply crash and fall down
You're well out of order now, this is well out of town
She pulls away, my arms are tightly clamped round her waist
Gently pushes me back as she looks at me straight
Turns around so she's now got her back to my face
Takes one step forward, looks back, and then walks away
Dry your eyes mate
I know it's hard to take but her mind has been made up
There's plenty more fish in the sea
Dry your eyes mate
I know you want to make her see how much this pain hurts
But you've got to walk away now
It's over
I know in the past I've found it hard to say
Tellin' you things, but not tellin' straight
But the more I pull on your hand and say
The more you pull away
Dry your eyes mate
I know it's hard to take but her mind has been made up
There's plenty more fish in the sea
Dry your eyes mate
I know you want to make her see how much this pain hurts
But you've got to walk away now

A lot of stuff comes to mind, one odd one is Racing in the Street (from Live 75-85) by Bruce Springsteen. The Lyrics are quite sad however the 2nd half of the song as featured on that album has a hugely uplifting instrumental and so listening to the whole thing is very cathartic.
I got a sixty-nine chevy with a 396
Fuelie heads and a hurst on the floor
Shes waiting tonight down in the parking lot
Outside the seven-eleven store
Me and my partner sonny built her straight out of scratch
And he rides with me from town to town
We only run for the money got no strings attached
We shut `em up and then we shut `em down
Tonight tonight the strips just right
I wanna blow `em off in my first heat
Summers here and the time is right
Were goin racin in the street
We take all the action we can meet
And we cover all the northeast state
When the strip shuts down we run `em in the street
From the fire roads to the interstate
Some guys they just give up living
And start dying little by little piece by piece
Some guys come home from work and wash up
Then go racin in the street
Tonight tonight the strips just right
I wanna blow `em all out of their seats
Calling out around the world
Were going racin in the street
I met her on the strip three years ago
In a camaro with this dude from l.a.
I blew that camaro off my back and drove that little girl away
But now theres wrinkles around my babys eyes
And she cries herself to sleep at night
When I come home the house is dark
She sighs baby did you make it all right
She sits on the porch of her daddys house
But all her pretty dreams are torn
She stares off alone into the night
With the eyes of one who hates for just being born
For all the shut-down strangers and hot rod angels
Rumbling through this promised land
Tonight my baby and me were gonna ride to the sea
And wash these sins off our hands
Tonight tonight the highways bright
Out of our way mister you best keep
`cause summers here and the time is right
Were goin racin in the street

I can think of quite a few people in NJ who do, including myself
@Viking: Pretty interesting story. I love it when things work out nicely with music like that

--I'd Love To Change the World - Ten Years After
Everywhere is freaks and hairies
Dykes and fairies, tell me where is sanity
Tax the rich, feed the poor
Till there are no rich no more
I'd love to change the world
But I don't know what to do
So I'll leave it up to you
Population keeps on breeding
Nation bleeding, still more feeding economy
Life is funny, skies are sunny
Bees make honey, who needs money, No none for me
I'd love to change the world
But I don't know what to do
So I'll leave it up to you
o yah
World pollution, there's no solution
Institution, electrocution
Just black and white, rich or poor
Senators stop the war
I'd love to change the world
But I don't know what to do
So I'll leave it up to you
--Just a Thought - Gnarls Barkley
All I want is your understanding
As in the small act of affection
"Why is this my life?"
Is almost everybody's question
And I've tried
Everything but suicide
But it's crossed my mind
I prefer peace
Wouldn't have to have one word of possession
But essentially I'm an animal
So just what do I do with all the aggression?
Well I've tried
Everything but suicide
But it's crossed my mind
Life is a one-way street, and if you could paint it
I'd draw myself going in the right direction
So I go all the way - like I really really know -
But the truth is I'm only guessin'
And I've tried
Everything but suicide
Oooh but it's crossed my mind
Just a thought
It's even dark in the daytime
It's not just good - it's +Great Depression+
When I was lost I even found myself
Looking in the gun's direction
And so I've tried
Everything but suicide
But yes - it's crossed my mind
But I'm fine
--Hush - Deep Purple
I got a certan little girl she's on my mind
No doubt about it she looks so fine
She's the best girl that I ever had
Sometimes she's gonna make me feel so bad
Hush, hush
I thought I heard her calling my name now
Hush, hush
She broke my heart but I love her just the same now
Hush, hush
Thought I heard her calling my name now
Hush, hush
I need her loving and I'm not to blame now
(Love, love)
They got it early in the morning
(Love, love)
They got it late in the evening
(Love, love)
Well, I want that, need it
(Love, love)
Oh, I gotta gotta have it
She's got loving like quicksand
Only took one touch of her hand
To blow my mind and I'm in so deep
That I can't eat and I can't sleep
Listen
Hush, hush
Thought I heard her calling my name now
Hush, hush
She broke my heart but I love her just the same now
Hush, hush
Thought I heard her calling my name now
Hush, hush
I need her loving and I'm not to blame now
(Love, love)
They got it early in the morning
(Love, love)
They got it late in the evening
(Love, love)
Well, I want that, need it
(Love, love)
Oh, I gotta gotta have it
--Sun Doesn't Rise - Mushroomhead
Some kind of evidence
Some kind of reason
Why I can't find a way
To begin my life
Somewhere in this dying day
If I can only find a way for my escape
I find it hard to concentrate with all my past mistakes
To begin my life
I can't feel my faith can't recall my crime
I think I sealed my fate along the way I may have lost my mind
I guess we're all damaged in our own way
Alone in our own way
Distant headlights desolate highway
Sun doesn't rise at all
Who knows how far I'll fall
Sun doesn't rise at all
Who knows how far I'll fall
With eyes wide open
I can't recall my crime I think I sealed my fate
I can watch my world evolve
Alone in our own way, I think I sealed my fate
Nothing left to die for
I can't recall my crime I think I sealed my fate
Thoughts inside can make me crawl
Think I sealed my fate
Make me drop down on my knees
Break me down until I question me
Darkness can't destroy my drive
Sun doesn't rise at all
Who knows how far I'll fall
Sun doesn't rise at all
Welcome my downfall
Sun doesn't rise at all
Somewhere in this dying day as I plan my great escape
I find it hard to concentrate while you maintain to control
I fold and falter, empty alter, all I gave I pray it makes me whole
I think the brink's around the corner
There's an error in my soul
I can't feel my faith can't recall my crime
I think I sealed my fate along the way I may have lost my mind
I guess we're all damaged in our own way
Alone in our own way
Distant headlights desolate highway
Sun doesn't rise at all
Who knows how far I'll fall
Sun doesn't rise at all
Who knows how far I'll fall
I can't feel my faith
Can't recall my crime
Damaged in our own way
Alone in our own way
Desolate highway
--Crazy - Gnarls Barkley
I remember when, I remember, I remember when I lost my mind
There was something so pleasant about that place.
Even your emotions had an echo
In so much space
And when you're out there
Without care,
Yeah, I was out of touch
But it wasn't because I didn't know enough
I just knew too much
Does that make me crazy?
Does that make me crazy?
Does that make me crazy?
Possibly [radio version]
probably [album version]
And I hope that you are having the time of your life
But think twice, that's my only advice
Come on now, who do you, who do you, who do you, who do you think you are,
Ha ha ha bless your soul
You really think you're in control
Well, I think you're crazy
I think you're crazy
I think you're crazy
Just like me
My heroes had the heart to lose their lives out on a limb
And all I remember is thinking, I want to be like them
Ever since I was little, ever since I was little it looked like fun
And it's no coincidence I've come
And I can die when I'm done
Maybe I'm crazy
Maybe you're crazy
Maybe we're crazy
Probably
Uh, uh
--Becoming Cold - Mushroomhead
Never heard my name called
Never any one at all
Never in the right
At the heart of every fault
Time to write me off
(Demand the antidote
To rescue this stranded soul
Cast away the last you know
That the dream is gone)
Every day life takes it's toll
Every day life takes it's toll
When are we going home
Becoming cold
How did we get here
How did we get here
What are we alive for
Give me a reason
Give me a reason
To murder my idols
(save your faith for the faithless we need it most
Need something to believe in but nothing comes close
Hindsight won't let me sleep at night amputate this foolish pride
Minds eye pickled in cyanide and I can laugh at myself)
The deviants will deviate rewrite the rules alleviate
A martyrs meant to mediate messiahs mend the word
Never heard my name called
Never any one at all
Never in the right
At the heart of every fault
Time to write me off
I feel no pulse
No vital signs
A forced impulse
Among idol minds
Every day life takes it's toll
Every day life takes it's toll
When are we going home
Becoming cold
How did we get here
How did we get here
What are we alive for
Give me a reason
Give me a reason
To murder my idols
(save your faith for the faithless we need it most
Need something to believe in but nothing comes close
Hindsight won't let me sleep at night amputate this foolish pride
Minds eye pickled in cyanide and I can laugh at myself)
How did we get here
How did we get here
What are we alive for
Give me a reason
Give me a reason
To murder my idols
Some heads have got to roll
Every day life takes it's toll
Every day life takes it's toll
When are we going home
You made me what I am today
The toll that my life's taken everyday
Don't think I'll ever make it home
(Not going home)
I won't forget where I came from
Or what you made me
Some heads have got to roll
--White Light - Gorillaz
White light
White light
White light
Alcohol, alcohol, alcohol, white light
--Black Hole Sun - Soundgarden
In my eyes
Indisposed
In disguise
As no one knows
Hides the face
Lies the snake
The sun
In my disgrace
Boiling heat
Summer stench
'Neath the black
The sky looks dead
Call my name
Through the cream
And I'll hear you
Scream again
Black hole sun
Won't you come
And wash away the rain
Black hole sun
Won't you come
Won't you come
Stuttering
Cold and damp
Steal the warm wind
Tired friend
Times are gone
For honest men
And sometimes
Far too long
For snakes
In my shoes
A walking sleep
And my youth
I pray to keep
Heaven send
Hell away
No one sings
Like you
Anymore
Hang my head
Drown my fear
Till you all just
Disappear
--Destroy the World Around Me - Mushroomhead
As they feed the war machine and pull the strings behind the scenes
With a bloated sense of supremacy
Blinded by the preconceived distorted way to be perceived
It's what's believed by your enemy
Hold on to something - Here come the rains
This damn is about to break
Hold on to nothing - Self-contained
How much more can you take
Might is right and thought is wrong it's along road nowhere
Enjoy the ride with blinders on
Your government is in control they'll keep you safe inside your homes
Board your windows lock your doors - let freedom ring
Hold on to something - Here come the rains
This damn is about to break
Hold on to nothing - Self-contained
How much more can you take
Before you break
Let freedom ring
Unto the dawn of darkness - glistening
Faithless savior murder me
Feed me to failure - disbelief
What does it take - everything I could want believe
Feed me to failure faithless savior murder me
Finish me - feed me to failure murder me
Finish me - what does it take to stop me
Finish me - nothing could make me not believe
Won't let this world get to me - finish me
I'll never live your life for me - unto the dawn
Unto the dawn of darkness
Unto the dawn - glistening
Feed me to failure finish me
Feed me to failure murder me
Unto the dawn of darkness finish me
Finish me - Unto the dawn murder me
Caught in the wave of the world around me
And in this state I'm sure it could drowned me
Will I ever learn the way everywhere I turn today
Something tells me runaway something burns inside me
Even though I've pressed erase
Feel it slowly fade away
Thoughts that go on endlessly
How much longer can I wait
What does it take what does it take
Caught in the wave of the world around me
And in this state I'm sure it could drowned me
Caught in the wave of the world around me
And in this state I'm sure it could drowned me
What does it take what does it take
Will I ever learn the way everywhere I turn today
Something tells me runaway something burns inside me
Even though I've pressed erase
Feel it slowly fade away
Thoughts that go on endlessly
How much longer can we wait
Caught in the wave of the world around me
And in this state I'm sure it could drowned me
--Never There - Cake
i need your arms around me, i need to feel your touch
i need your understanding, i need your love so much
you tell me that you love me so, you tell me that you care
but when i need you baby, you're never there
on the phone long, long distance
always through such strong resistance
first you say you're too busy
i wonder if you even miss me
never there
you're never there
you're never, ever, ever, ever there
a golden bird that flies away, a candle's fickle flame
to think i held you yesterday, your love was just a game
a golden bird that flies away, a candle's fickle flame
to think i held you yesterday, your love was just a game
you tell me that you love me so, you tell me that you care
but when i need you baby
take the time to get to know me
if you want me why can't you just show me
we're always on this roller coaster
if you want me why can't you get closer?
never there
you're never there
you're never ever ever ever there
--Fell On Black Days - Soundgarden
Whatsoever I've feared has
Come to life
Whatsoever I've fought off
Became my life
Just when everyday
Seemed to greet
Me with a smile
Sunspots have faded
And now I'm doing time
Cause I fell on
Black days
Whomsoever I've cured
I've sickened now
Whomsoever I've cradled
I've put you down
I'm a search light soul
They say but I can't
See it in the night
I'm only faking
When I get it right
Cause I fell on
Black days
How would I know
That this could be my fate
So what you wanted to
See good has made you blind
And what you wanted to
Be yours has made it
Mine
So don't you lock up
Something that you
Wanted to see fly
Hands are for shaking
No not tying
I sure don't
Mind a change
But I fell on black
Days
How would I know
That this could be
My fate
--I Heard It Through the Grapevine - Creedence Clearwater Revival
Oo, Bet you're wond'ring how I knew 'bout your plans to make me blue
With some other guy that you knew before?
Between the two of us guys, you know I love you more.
It took me by surprise, I must say, when I found out yesterday. Oo,
I heard it through the grapevine, not much longer would you be mine.
Oo, I heard it through the grapevine, and I'm just about to lose my mind.
Honey, honey yeah.
You know that a man ain't supposed to cry, but these tears I can't hold inside.
Losin' you would end my life you see, 'cause you mean that much to me.
You could have told me yourself that you found someone else.
Instead,
I heard it through the grapevine, not much longer would you be mine.
Oo, I heard it through the grapevine, and I'm just about to lose my mind.
Honey, honey yeah.
People say you "Hear from what you see, na na not from what you hear."
I can't help bein' confused; if it's true, won't you tell me dear?
Do you plan to let me go for the other guy that you knew before? Oo,
I heard it through the grapevine, not much longer would you be mine.
Oo, I heard it through the grapevine, and I'm just about to lose my mind.
Honey, honey yeah.

That covers most of it
But I wish there was more music that could help.
Also, Mushroomhead is an amazing band and I recommend anyone to pick up Xiii. One of the best cd's I have ever had.

If I'm feeling down, I love to put on pearl jam's black - fuck, what an awesome song.
Hey... oooh...
Sheets of empty canvas, untouched sheets of clay
Were laid spread out before me as her body once did.
All five horizons revolved around her soul
As the earth to the sun
Now the air I tasted and breathed has taken a turn
Ooh, and all I taught her was everything
Ooh, I know she gave me all that she wore
And now my bitter hands chafe beneath the clouds
Of what was everything.
Oh, the pictures have all been washed in black, tattooed everything...
I take a walk outside
I'm surrounded by some kids at play
I can feel their laughter, so why do I sear?
Oh, and twisted thoughts that spin round my head
I'm spinning, oh, I'm spinning
How quick the sun can drop away
And now my bitter hands cradle broken glass
Of what was everything?
All the pictures have all been washed in black, tattooed everything...
All the love gone bad turned my world to black
Tattooed all I see, all that I am, all I'll be... yeah...
Uh huh... uh huh... ooh...
I know someday you'll have a beautiful life,
I know you'll be a sun in somebody else's sky, but why
Why, why can't it be, why can't it be mine

Cool you dig the shroomhead way across country, they're a cleveland band ive enjoyed many a shows of theirs, but havent actually seen them since they went nation wide, there where 3 badass discs before they blew up nationally, a self titled 1st disc, the second was superbuick, and M3 was the other. I think xiii was there last disc with both original singers, JMANN left and i kinda lost touch with them, its an aight disc, though half the material came from their older discs. Im tellin you SFOSOK it you want a real treat check out those 3 discs and see what shroomhead stomped all over northeast ohio with since like 1995. You gotta hear em dood, PM me if ya want em. Also the cleveland band (216) named after the cleveland zip code is basically the orinal mushroomhead with only JMANN singing and they wear no stage getup, just rock out really really heavy! look into em man, im tellin ya. PM me i WANT you to here em.
Posting some lyrics from the opposite end of the spectrum though, Little Wing originanlly written by Clapton but was beautifully done by Hendrix, These 2 paragraphs of text cannot convey the the feeling of the song at all.
Little Wing
Well, she's walking through the clouds,
With a circus mind that's running wild,
Butterflies and Zebras,
And Moonbeams and fairy tales.
That's all she ever thinks about.
Riding with the wind.
When I'm sad, she comes to me,
With a thousand smiles she gives to me free.
It's alright, she says it's alright,
Take anything you want from me,
Anything.
Fly on little wing.
