PvP? How to make death interesting...

This question has bugged me for a long time.

I strongly believe that if your killed by NPC mobs that your gear should stay on your corpse and you would have to retreive it (EQ1 style) this makes it harder to explore at lower levels and creates a level curb for exploration of the world, however; I do not feel the same way about PvP death as that is much harder to avoid even in areas your own level. My question is, in a world where you could be killed by another player at any moment what do you think should be the penalty for death?

his point is that when you die by monster, you have to go get your stuff...but should that be the case for PvP?

Okay take this for example. You are running around in lower dungeons...requiring you to go back and get your gear ensures that you wont be a complete dipshit and run to the lowest level. you'll play it alittle safer. You cant play it safe with PvP though. At any time, for any reason, someone can just go and kill you. Thats not stupidity. Suuureee there could be well known "bad lands" where PvPing is worse than usual, but pretty much in MMORPGs if anyone can kill anytime they'll just go kill you for the hell of it.

why should you be punished for someone else's dickery?

um

not used to an mmorpg that if you die you to a mob you have to go get your stuff.

or is it based on:

Die by mob/npc ... % chance of dropping anything from no items to up to usually 3 items.... lower chance of dropping equiped items.

So i die by mob and i have to run back to where i died to pickup say a set of boots or whatever. I'm used to that.

I think PVP dieing then dropping is bullshit though.

This is resolved if someone pvps.. but ends up PKing .... going red and when red. your stats chance that if you die to mob/npc/pc you could drop same if not a higher percentage of stuff.


ATM, lineage2 ... you get over 5 pks and are red.. you have a chance of litterly exploding and dropping EVERYTHING.

You die to a mob, you drop all your stuff. Plain and simple (it is EQ1 style) and I found it created a great exploration curve. You could not explore the entire game at lvl 1, you had to wait and do it as you leveled or lose all your gear. This also promots team work, and adds functionality to classes that primarly do crowed control (they can't kill much, but they could maby hold enemys at bay whilst you get your stuff.)

My question, though, is what would a good punishment for dieing in PvP be? So it is avoided and not a thing to look forward to as well as being not so devistating you lose all your equipment.

PKing is a part of any open pvp game (shadowbane, lineage 2) I do not like how they handle it, however; my idea for PKing is more of a social system put in by the players then a technoligy one. If you PK, there are social (non combat related) penaltys that happen. Merchants will not bargin with you, and at some point will not sell to you. City guards might look the other way if you get jumped, etc.

your guys lose XP when you die?

if you die to a mob in l2 under lvl 52.... you lose 7% xp (this equivilent % to say WoW would be nearly a full lvl) over 52 is 4% which in wow would also still be around 1 lvl..

PVP death, if a war clan war is not engaged.... is same as mob death.... if clan war is on, 1%
