??? jetta for a DD

well....as you all already know, i don't have my beautiful 8 anymore and i need a car to get me around. and i've been thinking of getting a jetta as my next car. now, i've been hearing that they're not the most reliable cars ever, and would probably be better off w/a ford .

i would just like some feedback on what you guys think of the jetta to have it as a Daily Driver. i'm looking at the jettas because in my research they are fuel efficient, seem to be affordable, have 4 doors (need it for the family you know ), and they're not a toyota or honda that everybody else has. but i've also been hearing about the reliability issues, so that is starting to make me think as to what those issues are. as long as the issues are rather simple things to fix, i'm fine with that...but if those issues revolve around blown engines, trannies, and electrical systems......then i'll look into something else.

One of my co-workers has been driving a Jetta for about 2 years now. To my knowledge, he hasn't had any major issues with it.

Next thing is this: Are you looking at new or used ones?

If used, do a search using the VIN to see its history. That tells a whole lot about the reliability of that particular car.

Jetta's are really nice from what I heard... And very easy to tune too (if you are into that sorta stuff!)

im hopeing to replace my sunbird with a jetta. i just need to replace the powersteering pump and it should be good to go. it seemed like a nice car the one time i drove it on the way home.

it may be a year older then my sunbird, but its got almost 1/3rd the miles too.

i'm looking at an older one......probably somewhere between '99-'01 year

yes, doing a carFAX report thing will say alot, and i'll order them for the jettas that interest me most.

i'm not going to "tune" the jetta i get....that's if i even get a jetta. it's still up in the air, but a jetta is what i'm most interested in ATM.

umm........as for tunning the jetta, i would (in order):

1. tint windows
2. security alarm
3. stereo system
4. suspension
5. HID headlight conversion kit
6. wheels and rims

that's what i would do. nothing more, nothing less. it'll be totally just for looks....all that, and still have fun with the family .

your main concerns for any year of jetta are the window motors, seat morors, door handles inside and out, door locks inside and out,all the trim falls off sooner or later sooner if you are in hot environment, all the interior knobs will break sooner or later if used alot, heater duct flaps coming into dash will break if used alot, heater core, air conditioning compressor, headliner will seperate from backing if you have cloth headliner,if the motor doesnt have records of service then dont bother because these cars love to be maintained, alot.there is other stuff that are problems but it depends on who owned it and whether it was garaged or not and kept serviced or not.if you get one with over 50000 then make sure the timing belts were replaced.this opinion is from personally inspecting 100s of jettas of all years.i dont know anything related to repairing but i do have a good idea of the troubles these cars have.here in oregon there are alot of jettas for some reason.

Just get a Toyota or Honda like everyone else.

If I was going for a Jetta though, I'd probably look for a car with standard transmission, without power doors/windows, A/C, or any other optional features, so less possible stuff to break. No A/C might be inconvenient where you live though...

@ >GSXR<mrbusa: if those are all the issues w/the jetta, then that's not biggie IMO. and in all honesty, those same things would happen to any car given enough time. the timing belt though, you are right about it.

@ Zelig: i don't want a toyota or honda . and of course, i'd get the MT over AT any day . but i would get all the extra features though

i understand that alot of those issues happen to all vehicals with time, but,i have seen two and three year old jettas that have just fallen apart.dont get me wrong they are nice vehicals and ride really well if they are taken care of.there 4 banger is underpowered but so is my subaru.i would not get an auto if you want to be able to keep up with traffic, lol.i have seen the trim and door handle issues occure on jettas less than a year old.hope you find a good one.just be really picky.

Truth about a jetta (especially in california) Its an over all nice car, but has no room behind the driver if you have long legs. It gets decent gas mileage but be prepared to be laughed at. It is a very girly car no matter what color you get it in. So if you want a decent car and don't care about getting laughed at then it is the car for you.

My sis has a blue Jetta (small little bugger) and I had to drive it around cause I didn't get my Camaro back yet. Man people could not stop laughing at me (loud metal in the background of course) which I really didn't care about, just though I would let you know. Its a very small car, made for women.

lol, no thats not why really. Find a picture of a guy driving it, it just looks off. Also there is almost no headroom in that car, as a driver and passenger. I'm about 6'1 and I kept hitting my head on the ceiling. Its just made for chicks.

well, being a mere 5'10 I can't comment on headroom, although I have stacks of it in my golf (which is a good way smaller than a bora), but I gotta agree with sandok. it just doesn't strike me as a chicks car. an MX 5 or a nissan micra yes, a VW bora (jetta) no.

@ GDF: i have seen guys drive them, and i don't see it being a "chicks car" as you're saying. you are taller than 6'11", because i'm 6', and when we met, you were significantly taller than i. when i sat down in the jetta, i had plenty of leg room, at any given point in time, the most amount of people that will be in the car with me, will be a total of four people (even though it sits down five).

and again.....it being a "chick's car" is not true. so far, you're outnumbered in that sense, as only you see it being that.

@GSX: those issues are issues i can deal with. the few jettas i've already seen were beat up a little bit from the inside, but that is to be expected from any used car. but aside from the few scratches, stains, and dirty marks (from dirty hands i'm guessing ), the interior of the car seemed perfectly fine with them.

@ Sandok: that little red car you call a "chick's car" is nothing better than butt ugly

Well I'm just sayin from my personal experience from driving in it. I have very long legs and arms and have to sit upright or I fall asleep. I also was riding in the back on the way to the beach and I hit my head about 10-12 times. It has an odly big trunk though, enough to fit two bodies...

well, that won't matter for me, as i won't be the one sitting in the back seat now will i . the people who would be going in the back seat would be my lil girl, or my sisters.

but you're thinking whole bodies......everybody knows that fitting bodies into a trunk is much more effective when they're cut up. besides, the dead persons won't care if they're cut up or not

the used jetta we have a work is a frikin lemon. brake hop, power steering lag, the works....but i think it's a singular case and not a "jetta" issue.

I like the jetta's, but to be honest, you can probably get a volvo S40 1.9T cheaper with less miles. we have one of them for sale for $8880 with 68,000 miles on it.
