That could be a very big IF! There was an article just a couple of weeks ago by Clark Howard addressing the issue of having wrecked cars totalled in accidents BUT insurance not covering the total amount of the loan if the 'real' value of the car isn't enough to cover the amount of the balance of the loan.

We ran into this a few years ago when I had my big accident driving my son's Ford Ranger. One company wanted to say the odometer had another 100,000 miles on it and our own company wouldn't buy that. The difference was getting a little more than was owed on the car or paying a difference of about $1600 to the bank.

So, CDs: Be sure you don't jump into this until you know all the options.

i know. i was actually hoping that it would be totalled out. i've been on a bad streak for a while, and now i don't have the burden of a $500/mo car payment + another $300/mo minimum on premium octane fuel. Yes, i'm sad to see my car gone, but later on after i'm making bank, i'll buy me another 8

it's called gap insurance . Gap insurance is purchased at the momment you are buying a vehicle from the dealer. Basically what it does is that if your car is totalled, the insurance company will only pay the blue book value of the vehicle, and gap insurance will cover the remaining difference. So i need not worry about it .

must have. That's the only reason why they would total the car. must have been from the front end. The radiator was cracked due to it landing on a large rock. that rock must have pushed the front of the frame far enough to make it not worht fixing

Well, here in Georgia, and I believe other places, too, if any combination of the three main panels gets damaged - front or rear, it renders the car totalled. Doesn't have to be frame damage, either.

here in cali, it's different. for sure if the frame is damaged it's totalled. however, if the frame is not damaged, but the amount of damage done to the car exceeds 70% of the vehicle's blue book value then it is still considered a total loss to the vehicle.

here in washington it has to be 100% of the bluebook value. I think our van was with like $1600 and the insurrance paid out $1500 but didnt declare it totaled.

That's what they did with my son's pickup. After paying off the balance he got a check for roughly $1300.

I can't recall exactly how long it was. It was maybe a couple of weeks or so. Our insurance at the time was State Farm. It was clearly the other driver's fault and State Farm settled with us and then went after the other company for reimbursement. Two weeks might have even been too long. I simply can't remember as it was a little more than 9 years ago.

Gap insurance typically runs about $4-600 as a one time payment when you purchase a new vehicle...and it's worth every penny.

As for totalling it, what they do is have it appraised if they are unsure, but if the adjuster is sure [frame damage is almsot always a totalling], then it's totalled on the spot....you can, however, request an appraisal, and even a second opinion on that

PS - if ya want a car, come see me...I work for Ford now
