Is Going 2x6800GT that much better then a X850XTPE ?

Hi every one.....
im extreamly confused about the option that i have of either going 2x6800GT or with a X850XTPE on my Asus A8N SLI Deluxe

I mean my only reason for personally wanting the extra power...besides me being able to show off...would be it getting me a more reliable source of consistant frame rate on mid resolutions....for example 1280x1024...
reason being that im sure to come across heavy duty games for even the SLi setup in the near future...so having that woking on 1600x1200 might pretty well become a problem...so if i go SLi i'd also wont to know how well it does on reducing frame rate dip/drops/shutter etc...
I do have a wide screen monitor and i've herd 2x6800GT/U's giving problmes with WS LCD monitors..etc...

Is SLI that much worth it...is it that much better then a X850XTPE...
does it blow the X850XTPE in frame rate consistance even on lower resolutions...
for eg..

what if the X850XTPE cant handle a particular level or type of effect in a game even @ 1280x1080 would 2x6800GT's gain a pick there and not shutter as the X850XTPE....jsut wondering....
if i go SLi my only reason would be to reduce average....min frame rate...or for that matter to fully remove it from games that support it...

so what is it then , does SLi bering a change..compaired to high end cards like the x850xtpe or what ever...
Am i to say im going to gain a 20% frame rate improvement...over all...20%meaning real 20%

just dont know...i have'nt ocme across people being honest about their SLi performance...all they say is its double perofrmance..while reviews tell a different story...

So could any one please help...add a word or two to help me make the right choice.....

thanks...for your time..

From some of the benchmarks and info I have seen here and there (mind you I have not researched this much since I will not go PCI-E for a while) but 2x6800GTs were not much faster than 1 6800 Ultra. Which makes it a more expensive solution from the start. Now say you can afford one now, and 2-3 months later can get another one, thats where I think its a good fit. However, I think the 850XTPE would be a better 1 time shot purchase or hold out alittle longer and catch the next wave unless you really need the upgrade. Just my 2 cents. Hope it helps.

Well I did it both ways and now Im going back to the X850 XT

To get any use from 2 GT's you need to run at 1600x1200 minimum all the time. Anything else and 2 GT's are overkill.

An X850XT will clock past a PE with no problem (Any of them). An XT will put two GT's to shame under 1600x1200.

Hope it helps.

Yes Shade D 2 6800GT's is quite alot faster than an X850XT-pe.Just for comparison My rig with the X850XT-pe I had OC'd to 550/600 got around 6300 in 3DMark05 while the 2 GT's running at stock speeds scores like 9400,so there is quite a bit of difference. The 2 GT's will definately offer higher levels of AA and AF at higher resolutions ,like sandok says.
