Problem with Quake 3 Arena and Nvidia GeForce Go 420

Recently i bough a laptop, the hp compaq nx-9105 which comes with an athlon xp 3000+ 512 ram and a nVidia GeForce Go 420 32MB graphics-card. Till now i played many games in high details with no problems. games like need for speed underground 2 run very nice even in high details and with anti-allising. The problem im having now not knowing why is occuring is with Quake 3 Arena. When i start the game it runs very slow. When i make game it only gets slow when i fire with a gun. my machine is really good for q3 but i dont know why it slows... can someone help me? i read somewhere something about the sound, but i cant fix it

Patches? Have you tried installing the latest patches for Q3?

I downloaded the 66.93 latest graphic driver from nvidia's official site and downloaded the Quake 3 Arena Point Release 1.32. Don't know what's going on...

Do you have other Q3 Engine based games? I want to see if this is OpenGL only or just isolated to Q3.

Example of Q3 based games included

Call of Duty
Return to Castle Wolfenstein
Soldier of Fortune 2

System Specs

Sounds like graphic card related game issue ..

sound like your video's under powerd
especially with only 32mb of video ram!

GeForce4 420 Go:
190 MHz Core / 200 mhz 64bit memory, NV17M,
hardware support direct X 7.0, Vertex Shader Version T&L only,
2 pixel pipes with 2 texture units each, 2 vertex shaders...

Have you tried turning the settings / resoultion way down... make sure your not useing any AA or AF etc.....

Personally I'd see if your video is upgradeable thats cheesy video for a good laptop. probubly becouse it's a "bussness laptop"

The problem is not my specs . besides its Quake3 !!! OMG!

that graphics card should be able to handle q3a easy, my old tnt2 m64 handled it fine

it does sound like an opengl/q3a engine issue

do you have any other ogl games?

Sinc you don't have any games, download some demos like Medal of Honor: Allied Assault which should run fine on your system.

Sorry i'm not.... Yes you system specs are fine you video's specs is not. Buness laptops arent targeted for gameing period. Least i'd assume that
from the lousy video....

I think you mised reading the specs of your card that I posted your video card supports only supports Direct X 7 and below via hardware. Just becouse it can run DX8/DX9 doesnt mean it has any hardware support becouse you card does not. It also has NO pixel shader support only T&L.

Don't belive me? read it for your self.

A "geforce 2" destop veriant has higher clocks/specs
http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=2195&p=3

Alot of games have fallbacks for example HL2 is DX9, but it also backword support DX8 and DX7. You just loose the specaly effects and IQ improvment each new DX has brung....

Like I said before being a low end card... Have you tried turning the settings / resoultion way down... make sure your not useing any AA or AF etc.....

You should be able to play the game fine you just cant crack up the AA/AF or any ofthe eye candy if you do you'll likely have FPS problems....

Quake3 is an old game but so is your laptops video soultion
