Temperatures?

I was wondering what are the "OK" temperatures for GeForce 7 and 8 series. I heard that they underclock when they start overheating, so they cannot "die", but still I would rather buy a fan than need that to happen.

Anyone knows?

They underclock? Never heard that before. I know that some mobile versions do that, but I never heard it before for the desktop versions.

I don't know about the 7 series, but with the 8800GTS 640 I have, after using a program to have the fan steady at 93% I get temperatures from 50s to low 70s, depending on what I do.

I found the automatic fan control (no program used) to be awful and allowing the card to reach too high temps for my comfort.

I know for a fact that my card (8800GT G92), the temperature threshold is 105c. That figure originally sourced from EVGA tech support.

I know that this can happen in many/all? of notebook/mobile GPUs. I just never heard of it every happening with desktop GPUs before, so I just don't know.

If you are thinking of a desktop GPU, then unless you do something horribly wrong (no thermal paste, no air flow in the case, bad graphics card, you get the picture), I don't see any of the 7 or 8 series ever reaching high enough temperature to find out first hand if they underclock. Even with my older x1800xt with HORRIBLE air flow, really bad fan, more dust than eh a dusty place, it never went over 90s. The 8 series of nvidia (I wouldn't bet about the 7 series...) are relatively cool and should never reach those temps, unless something is wrong or you overclock like hell. In the latter case the system will probably hung than underclock.

What temperatures are you seeing? Also its worth taking the card out, cleaning the cooler, fan. taking the cooler off, and cleaning the thermal paste off, and using something like MX2 or AS5. reseat the card. quite often temps can drop a good 5c+.

It's around 70 under the load. We are talking about passively cooled 8400GS card in mATX case. There is a passively cooled 7600GS in my brother's machine, I will check temperatures that one later.

I just wanted to know the safe temperatures in advance, so I can take any actions to protect it from burning. But from this thread, it seems that 70 is OK, so it's all good

70C is well within spec of both cards.

the 7 series cards have threshold of 95C IIRC, and the 8 series goes upto 105C for 8800s and 95C for any other 8x00 cards.
